Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, January 2, 2004 Business Notes Extension offers classes on new Vernonia Chamber of Commerce options for taxes on forest land prepares for challenging year The property tax options available for forest landowners are changing in 2004, notes OSU Extension forester, Chal Landgren. To assist forestland owners wishing additional in- formation, local class sessions have been scheduled as follows: • January 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the OSU Extension Conference Room, 505 N. Co- lumbia River Hwy., St. Helens. • January 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement of the Clatskanie Senior Center (Flippen House), 620 Tichenor Street. • February 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Council Room at Vernonia City Hall, 1001 Bridge Street. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of Columbia County Small Woodland Asso- ciation. Instructors for the classes will be OSU Extension forester, Chal Landgren, and Paul Nys, local forest landowner. The classes are co-sponsored by OSU Extension and the Colum- bia County Small Woodlands Association. For further information, call the Columbia County OSU Ex- tension office at 503-397-3462. Pre-registration for any of the classes is appreciated. Officers will be elected at the first meeting of the Vernonia Chamber of Commerce for 2004, at noon on Wednesday, January 14, at the Buckhorn Cafe. Also on the agenda will be selecting meeting dates to in- clude evening and/or early morning meetings, in order to accommodate those members who cannot attend midday meetings. Following up on the Eco- nomic Development Town Hall hosted by the City of Vernonia, members will discuss how the Chamber can be most effective in helping and promoting local businesses, especially during the scheduled Hwy. 47 work. Decisions made at this meeting will have an impact on local business and all interest- ed people are urged to attend. Food Handlers Class scheduled Columbia County Commission meets A Food Handler’s Class will be held Friday, January 16, at 3:15 p.m. in the Vernonia Head Start building, 500 California Avenue. A test will be given, based on information in the Food Han- dler’s booklet, which is avail- able at the Vernonia Public Li- brary. It may also be purchased The first meeting in 2004 of the Columbia County Board of Commissioners will be Mon- day, January 5, at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room, Room 308, Columbia County Courthouse, 230 Strand Street, St. Helens. for $3.00 from Columbia Coun- ty Public Health, 2370 Gable Road, St. Helens. The cost of the test is $10; pre-registration is not required. Participants should read the in- formation before taking the test, and bring a pen or pencil.
