Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, November 20, 2003 47J board works on coaching staff, readerboard, homecoming Vernonia’s school board cruised through their Nov. 13 agenda with what is now their usual speed, completing the meeting in little over an hour, even with several students in teacher Judy Gingerich’s third grade class telling about their activities so far this year. Board member Randy Han- sen reported that he, board member Cari Levenseller and Superintendent Mike Funder- burg had reviewed the trans- portation contract and recom- mended that it not be renewed. Non-renewal should not be construed to mean the district is dissatisfied with job perform- ance, Hansen said, but as a way to open negotiations and discuss contract issues. The existing contract, in place since 1982, has numer- ous addenda and out-dated terminology that the district feels needs clarification. The board agreed with the recom- mendation. Reader Board Following installation last month of an electronic reader- board at the high school, pro- cedures were developed to regulate its use. Requests are to be submitted on the appro- priate form to the building office by noon on Friday for display the following week. Only school, athletic, and calendar events will be displayed. Com- munity requests will be ap- proved only for major events. The readerboard will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Coaching Staff After VHS Principal Curt Scholl recommended Casey Pupo, wife of Athletic Director Tony Pupo, for the assistant girls basketball coach, there was lengthy discussion about coaching staff appointments. Board member Tim Titus said he did not think that “this nepo- tism thing is good for our dis- trict,” citing problems that had previously occurred. Scholl told the board that, rather than the AD and head coach conducting interviews, as would normally be the case, he (Scholl) assist- ed in the interview process. Board chair Jim Krahn said he had contacted several VHS alumni about the position but they had scheduling conflicts. Scholl told the board that he would be responsible for su- pervision of coaching staff, not the AD as was previously the case, he added that Casey Pupo was the strongest appli- cant for the position. The board unanimously approved the ap- pointment. Ann Kingsley, in her role as junior high athletic director, told Please see page 14 VHS students art work shown Art students from Vernonia High School will be present to discuss their latest works at a special Photography and Water- color Show at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, at the Northwest Regional Education Service District, 5825 NE Ray Circle in Hillsboro. Parents, board members and others have been invited to attend. The works will be on display at the ESD through De- cember 17. Photos being featured at the show were taken by students during field trips to the Oregon Coast, downtown Portland and the Oregon Zoo. Each student was required to turn in twelve 8”x10” photos, from which they chose four of their very best for the show. The students devel- oped their own negatives and created all of their prints in the photo department darkroom at Vernonia High School, under the instruction of mentor teacher Doug Tesdal and stu- dent teacher Kim Morrison. Watercolors in the show were selected by advanced art students who sketched water- colors featuring three different landscapes — Ecola State Park, Indian Beach and Astoria boat docks — during a field trip to the Oregon Coast. Students have chosen one or two prints to enter in the show. Rosendin Electric, Inc. donates computers and other equipment to Vernonia schools The Vernonia Schools re- cently received a donation of computer equipment from Rosendin Electric, Inc. (RB) of Hillsboro. The used equipment has been surpassed by the needs of Rosendin’s staff, but has plenty of computing speed and capacity for the classroom. Passing on the six computers with keyboards and monitors, and two color printers to a facil- ity that needs them is all part of the electrical contractor’s active recycling policy.
