U n fo rtu n a te ly , th e ir o v e r w helm ing su p p o rt d id n ’t m ean a thing. W ith 246 “y e s ” votes and 97 “no” votes, the “double m ajority” requirem ent in va lid a t ed th e re s u lts b e c a u s e not enough registered vote rs b o th ered to cast a ballot. The sam e fate applied to M easure 34-70, a B anks parks levy, w hich re ceived ne arly 53 percent v o te r approval. C olum bia C o u n ty voters, on the o th e r hand, said “ N o” to a th re e -ye a r local op tion levy that w ould have raised fun ds fo r the S heriff’s D epartm ent. H ow ever, if vo te rs ha d s u p p o rte d the levy, th e re s u lt w o u ld ha ve been the sam e as in Banks: N ot enough vote s w ere cast to approve a fun ding m easure. The final ta lly w as 6,631 No v o te s (5 7 .8 6 p e rc e n t), w ith 4,7 63 (41.56 percent) ballots supporting the levy.
