The fire traveled fro m the barrel across the ground and to the truck, a cco rdin g to V ernonia Fire C hief Paul Epier. The person respon sible for starting the fire did not have a burn perm it. A w arning w as is sued and a bill will be p re s e n t ed fo r the costs of fire sup pre s sion. Now, w ith appro val by the board of directors, Funderburg has restructured the a d m in is trative team . A fte r consulting the d istrict’s stra teg ic plan for in c re a s in g s tu d e n t a c h ie v e m ent and the staff d e velop m en t plan, the rem aining a d m in is tra tors w ere placed to take a d v a n tage of the ir strengths, a c c o rd ing to Funderburg. The new structure divides in stru ctio n into th re e a re a s - kindergarten to third grade, fou r to eight, and high scho ol - w h ich c o rre s p o n d s to the s ta te ’s b e n c h m a rk a s s e s s m ents and will allow m ore e f fective analyses of state test scores. A new high school principal, C urt S choll, w as hired at a s p e cial school board m eeting Jun e 4. S choll com es to V ernonia from St. H elens H igh S chool, w here he has been v ic e -p rin c i pal and athletic d ire cto r fo r the past year. P reviously, he had been a social stud ies te a c h e r and head baseball co a ch at W est Linn and S ca p p o o se H igh Schools. He sta rte d te a ch in g social studies an d a lte rn a tive school at S iuslaw H igh S chool. S ch o ll’s wife Kelly is head vo l leyball coach at U niversity of P ortland and is expecting their third child. S choll was born and raised in St. H elens and played football and baseball at Linfield C ollege. M ike Durbin has m oved from the high school to W ashington G rade School, w here he w ill be principal fo r grades 4 -8 . Durbin w ill also serve as K -1 2 c u rricu lum director. A n n e K in g s le y w ill serve n e xt y e a r as p rin c ip a l fo r k in d e rg a rte n th ro u g h th ird grade at W ashington and Lin coln S chools and principal of M ist G rade S chool. K ingsley w ill also serve as m iddle s c h o o l1 athletic director. Laurie H arrison will rem ain as d ire ctor of special education and will assum e responsibility fo r d is tric t w ide a sse ssm e n t (state testing).
