Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, June 19, 2003 Feeling good by doing good for others VHS graduates received many awards and scholarships The smiles above illustrate the satisfaction and pleasure that Vernonia High School stu dents felt as they presented a check for $3,000 to Ken Dale, Assistant Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Presenting the check at an assembly shortly before the end of the school is the 2002-2003 Student Body Pres ident Heather Forster. Leadership students organized several fund raisers for JD as part of the Associated Student Body President’s Challenge. Heather decided on JD because she had worked with diabetic chil- dren at Larry Steele’s camp during the past cou ple of years. Fundraisers included proceeds from the first dance of the school year, product sales and raf fles, and one activity that allowed students to tape teacher/advisor Ms. Patti Dickens-Turk to the gym wall with duct tape, at 50 cents a foot (She stayed attached to the wall for 45 minutes). In a separate project that benefited JD, music student Jake Brock produced an evening of en tertainment that filled the gym with a paid crowd.
