May 14 - VPD, WCSO, OSP and North Plains Police Depart ment responded to a report of a fe male being held against her will and shots fired at 359 Arkansas Ave., Vernonia. Upon arrival, offi cers found the female to be un harmed and the male suspect had left the building. While clearing the building, officers found growing marijuana plants in a closet. Chris tian J. Kitchen, 29, Vernonia, was arrested, at a later date, for Kid napping, Possession of a Fire Arm and other charges. The case has been referred to the district attor ney. - Anthony L. Bartolomucci, 39, Vernonia, arrested by VPD. Officer found methamphetamine. May 15 - Zackary Tavola, 26, Vernonia, arrested for Interfering with a Police Officer. - Karleigh R. Kelly, 27, Col orado, warrant arrest. May 16 - Responded to emer gency call. Vernonia juvenile trans ported to the hospital due to high level of intoxication. May 21 - Contacted Ricky Bartholomew, 32, Vernonia, who had a no alcohol/tavern probation stipulation; advised him to meet with PO the next morning. May 22 - Officer took theft re port on Maple Street. May 23 - Arrested Michael Ed ward Davis, 50, Warrenton, for reckless driving and DUII. - A fight between Joann Carter and Debra Curtis, no ages given, both of Vernonia, resulted in one of them going to the hospital. VPD is investigating and has taken state ments from the involved parties. May 27 - Report of theft from two cars at high school. - Citizen reported that a water balloon hit him as he was walking in front of the Lyons Den Tavern. Investigation determined that the balloon came from the apartment above the tavern. Several persons were observed throwing balloons at pedestrians and at cars driving by. Referred to landlord and OLCC. - Greg Budge, no age given, Vernonia, reported finding a dead skunk in the back of his pickup truck. May 2 8 - 1 4 year-old Vernonia juvenile taken to Longview youth correctional facility upon court or der. May 28 - VPD officer injured at Riverside Trailer Park while at tempting to apprehend Michael Reed, 29, Vernonia, for parole vio lations. Officers from CCSO, OSP Banks office, St. Helens Police K-9 and WCSO responded to track down the suspect, who ran and es caped by floating the Nehalem Riv er about one-half mile down stream. He was taken to CCSO jail. Escape charges will be added to the Parole Violation charges. The injured offi cer was treated at an urgent care facility and was on leave until healed. May 29 - A five year-old boy swimming in Rock Creek saw what he thought was a crocodile in the river. It turned out to be a purse that had been stolen from a car at the high school parking lot. Noise Complaint.............. 4 Subpeona Service........... 1 Community Assist............ 1 Traffic................................ 5 Warning citations to decrease The Vernonia Police Depart ment delayed citation program has been successful in obtain ing compliance and public edu cation for drivers who are fail ing to wear seat belts or commit minor traffic violations, accord ing to Chief Mike Cahill. Beginning June 1, issuance of delayed citations will be come less frequent and more actual citations, requiring an appearance in court, will be come the norm. Chief Cahill re ported that any good education program must also include ac tual enforcement. “We have been issuing a good number of warnings and the word is out that we are stopping people who fail to obey the state law." This was fair, since there had been a significant drop in compliance with the state law, according to Cahill. ‘‘After six weeks of warnings, it is time to start the enforce ment aspect of the law,” Cahill said. He also noted that among the comments he has heard from motorists to justify their behavior is that “this is Vernon ia.” Chief Cahill says that his of ficers have had to remind them that state laws apply here, as well.
