It w as dow n sig n ifica n tly because, d e spite the best efforts of c a m paign vo lu n te e rs and staff, the U nited W ay of C olum bia C o u n ty fell fa r sho rt of its goal fo r the first tim e in ten years. W hen you m eet o r exceed goal e ve ryon e ce le b ra te s, and the acco la d e s of the co m m u n i ty follow. W hen you fail to m eet goal, the ce le b ra tio n and a cco lades are m uted, though th e e f fort and the c o n trib u tio n s of those w ho vo lu n te e re d to lead the cam paig n, and th o se w ho pledged th e ir sup port to the ag encies, w as proba bly m ore heroic than usual. T h anks to you, 659 pounds of food w as added to y o u r local foo d pantry. O ur shelves w ere b e c o m in g e m p ty of c e rta in fo o d s an d y o u r a d d itio n of canned foods helped to m eet the need. T h a n k you, esp ecial ly to P eter O ’Leary, w ho head ed up this project. The nu m be r of clients c o n tinues to increase. In January, w e assisted 304 people; in Feb, 298; in M arch 321; in April 327; and in M ay 341. This continual clim b in the num ber of people needing food assistance tells us that w e ’re doing w hat w e’re supposed to be doing: helping feed the hungry of ou r co m m u nity.
