Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, April 3, 2003 Library Week is a busy time A coloring contest, story telling, balloon creations and many more activities and events tor children will keep the Vernonia Public Library busy during National Library Week. Guess the number of items in a container on Wednesday, April 9, then find out April 12 whether you won a prize! Get a coloring sheet at the library and enter that contest, too. April 9 will also feature story time with Clark McGaugh at 3:00 p.m., followed by Muggins the Clown, who will be making balloon creations at 3:30 p.m. Author Susan Blackaby will read from her entertaining book. Rembrandt's Hat, at 2:00 Saturday, April 12. Children will also have the opportunity to make hats of their own. The winners of the coloring contest and guessing contest will be announced on Saturday, as well. Join the fun during National Library Week at the Vernonia Public Library. Obituary EVELYN R. VARLEY Evelyn Ruth Varley. 84, Buxton, died March 11, 2003. At her request, a private service was held March 14 at Union Point Cemetery in Banks, with Reverend C. Eugene Sabin officiating. Mrs. Varley was born November 7, 1918, in Manning, to Tony and Edith Benefiel Rinck. She grew up in Buxton and received her education in Banks. In 1938, she married Oral W. Varley. They lived in Buxton. She was a welder in the shipyards during World War II, a cook in a logging camp and a grocery store clerk at Country Village Market in Manning and Jim’s Supermarket in Banks, until she retired. Mrs. Varley was preceded in death by her husband in 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Gift of Scappoose; a brother, John Rinck of Buxton; nieces and nephews. Forest Grove Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. WEATHER REPORT She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Yvonne Reynolds, and Florena. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Plaster; a son, Robert; four grandchil dren; one great-grandchild; one great- great-grandchild. Remembrances are suggested to Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church. Omega Funeral and Cremation Ser vice was in charge of arrangements. BETTY E. KLEFFNER Betty E. Kleffner, 78, Riverton, Wyoming, died March 21,2003. A serv ice was held. Mrs. Kleffner was born March 8, 1925, in Arapahoe, Wyo. Her maiden name was Adams. In 1946, she married Leo H. Kleffn er. A memorial serv ice was held April 5, at Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mrs. Patterson was born October 21, 1900, in Burnside, III. Her maiden name was Brakensiek. She grew up in Burnside. In 1923, she married Henry Patter son. They lived in Pecha, III., and Cali fornia, and moved to Buxton in 1970.
