The INDEPENDENT, April 3, 2003 Page 11 PCC language, math classes here Portland Community College Spring classes are underway in Vernonia, starting this week, but students may still register for the courses. Beginning Spanish started April 3, and is held Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Ver nonia Public Library. The cost is $70, along with a $3 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first class. Intermediate Spanish began March 31; it is held Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Vernonia Senior Center. The cost is $80, plus a $3 fee for materials. Beginning French started on April 1 and meets Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Ver nonia High School in Room 10. Cost is $80. Intermediate Algebra is a 4 credit MTH 95 class. Prerequi sites include MTH 65 or MTH 70, or appropriate placement testing. This eleven-week class started March 31 and will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:50 p.m., at Vernonia High School in Room 5. Cost is $200. The third trimester started March 17th and the year has been full of surprises - everything from new rules to budget cuts. Spring sports season just started, too, and the teams are looking good! The girls softball team had their first game scheduled March 17 vs. Colton, but it was, sadly, cancelled due to the other teams lack of “healthy players.” The good news is that the girls raised a grand total of $1,700 doing the tri-fold fundraiser within the community. The money was desperately need ed, due to budget cuts, and will be used to buy new uniforms. The team’s second home game, on March 31st, was a tremendous 14-4 win over Neah- Kah-Nie. Overall, the season is off to a great start, and the girls will only improve as the sea son goes on. The boys baseball season is also looking very promising. They brought in a total of $1,400 with the tri-fold fundraiser around the community. The fundraiser was a little difficult because of the com petition between softball and baseball teams, made it hard to sell the tri-folds! Most people had “already bought one from a softball player,” or were going to. However, the baseball team is also looking great! Coach Pupo was disappointed that their first game was also cancelled due to the other team’s lack of eligible players. He also said that he feels the season will really take off in about a month, when the weather clears up, so the team can ac tually have practice. They have a tournament over spring break, and I have a feeling they will be up against some stiff competition, but you know the saying, “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger!” Their home game on the 31st was a shutout over Neah-Kah-Nie, 10-0. At the high school, they de cided to cut golf, and spring sports transporta tion. They also had to cut days from the school year, and while the students are very happy about that, the staff is not. Work days mean pay days, and without pay days, mean less money. The Golf team has had to pay for everything individually, this season. While it has worked out, and the team is going strong, it’s still tough. The school doesn’t provide transportation for the team and, I imagine, that makes it difficult. In fact, one of the bigger issues, is transporta tion for Spring sports. The school cut trans portation for spring sports, due to the lack of money. So softball, baseball, golf, track - all the spring sports teams - are responsible for their own transportation to all of their games. We won’t have any buses, and are depending on students and parents to get us there. Many of the students and staff were very angry after money was cut for spring sports transportation, but we all want to play, so we’ll find a way!!! Prom is coming up April 26th. This year it will be held at the Shilo Inn, in Seaside. All of the stu dents couldn’t be happier. I think that the cost for singles is at $25.00 and the cost for couples is $35.00. Some students were angry that the price was so high compared to last year, but they have a feeling that it will be worth it! Our prom court was just announced the week before spring break, and the lucky princesses are Stacy Lennen, Kendall Graham, Holly Murphy, Lydia Isaacson, Nicole Swayze, Jacki King. The princes are Jeremy Ruby, Gaspar Lobo, Alex Dinger, Josh W ard, John Walters and Jesse Borst. The school year has been great so far, and I’m sure it will continue to be fun. Through all the budget cuts, and rules, our school still finds ways to keep everything positive and make the best of things!
