Banks Fire District will use the funds for personal protec tive and rescue equipment. The Assistance to Firefight ers Grant Program is designed as an opportunity for the United States Congress to work with FEMA to enhance basic fire ShamRock’n Roll at H illsboro St. Pat’s Day Parade The community is invited to celebrate at the annual Hills boro St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 15! Spon sored by Murphy’s Furniture, the community event is a bene fit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland. The theme of this year’s pa rade is “Sham Rock’n R oll.” Staging for the parade will be gin at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot across from Hare Field on N.E. Grant Street in Hillsboro. The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. Starting from Hare Field, the parade route goes east to Cornell Road, south on Main St., west on Main to 2nd Ave., north on 2nd to Grant St., and east back to Hare Field. The $10.00 entry fee bene fits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland. Entry forms for the parade will be mailed out by February 11 to all previous par ticipants. If you do not receive an entry form within a week, or would like to be in the parade for the first time, entry forms are available at local Hillsboro businesses. Adding to the festivities, the Hillsboro Boys and Girls Club is developing post-parade ac tivities for children. These past- times will be on the Courthouse lawn. David Pauli son. “President Bush has pro vided the USFA an opportunity to take some much needed steps in providing these people the right tools to be able to do their jobs safely and more effi ciently. It is our hope this grant assistance program will demonstrate our commitment to improving fire and life safety across the country, and will pro vide the necessary incentive for all Americans to join in support ing these brave men and women, as they face the chal lenges of today." Over 19,000 fire depart ments applied for grant awards this year. The request of the Banks Fire District has been through a national peer review process involving over 300 fire service leaders. Produced by Theatre Professor Edwin Collier and conducted by Professor of Mu sic Scott Tuomi, the production opens on Wednesday, March 12 and continues through Sun day, March 16, in Tom Miles Theatre in Warner Hall on Pacific’s campus. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. The Mikado revolves around Nanki-Poo, who has banished himself from the little town of Titipu. Nanki-Poo has fallen in love with Yum-Yum, who is en gaged to be married to her guardian, Ko-Ko. However, when Nanki-Poo hears that Ko- Ko has been condemned to death tor the capital crime of flirting, he hastily returns to Titipu, only to learn that Ko-Ko has not only been granted a re prieve, but has been promoted to the post of Lord High Execu tioner. The Mikado soon takes notice of the lack of executions in Titipu and decrees that if no executions take place within a month, the city will be reduced to the status of a village. Ko-Ko, desperate to avoid cutting off his own head, vows to find a substitute, and at that moment, Nanki-Poo wanders onto the stage with a rope, determined to take his own life rather than live life without his beloved Yum-Yum. Ko-Ko immedidately seizes on this opportunity and offers a month of luxurious liv ing at the end of which Nanki- Poo would be decapitated. Nanki-Poo agrees, on the con dition that he is married to Yum- Yum right away so that he can spend his last month in wedded bliss. But just as the wedding celebration begins, a law is dis covered which decrees that a condemned man’s wife must be buried alive with his corpse.
