Written com ments on the plans, which iden tify and describe specific proj ects such as timber sales, road maintenance, stream enhance- ment and trail building, will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. March 31. The process provides an op portunity for the public to ask questions and offer comments on activities planned for state forest lands for the period from July 2003 through June 2004. Learn how to put the WOW in retailing at ODDA workshop “Putting the WOW in Re tail," a skill building work shop that is one of the “Tools for Downtown” work shops developed by the Oregon Downtown Devel opm ent Association (ODDA), will be presented at the Scout Cabin in Ver nonia on Wednesday, Feb ruary 26, at 6:30 p.m. At a time when the econ omy is slow and there is more competition for con sumers, this workshop is designed to help retailers become more effective by learning how to WOW your customers' every time they come into your store. The workshop presenter, Cynthia McBurney, has over 25 years experience in retail management, devel oping and im plem enting buying and prom otional plans, solving problems and leading retail businesses to success. She also owns and operates Kathleen’s of Dublin, an Irish and Scottish Celtic Shop in downtown Portland. McBurney will help you learn why the WOW experi ence is so important, what effect it can have on sales, how it provides free word-of- mouth advertising and its role in creating customer loyalty. This will be a regional workshop, drawing busi ness people from other communities, but the fee for Vernonia businesses is be ing paid as part of a market ing grant administered by the City of Vernonia in con junction with the Vernonia Cham ber of Commerce. Reservations are needed, however, and may be made through Vernonia City Hall, 503-429-5291, or by calling ODDA, 1-503-587-0574. Most of the rev enue from timber sales goes to county governments, local tax ing districts and the Common School Fund. The Northwest Oregon State Forests Management Plan pro vides guidance for 616,000 acres in the following districts: Astoria (Clatsop State Forest), Tillamook (western two-thirds of the Tillamook State Forest), Forest Grove (eastern one-third of the Tillamook State Forest), Cascade (Santiam State For est), West Oregon (scattered tracts in Benton, Polk and Lin coln counties), and Western Lane (scattered tracts in Lane County). The Southwest Oregon State Forest Management Plan covers 18,000 acres of blocked and scattered lands in Jose phine, Douglas, Curry and Jackson Counties. All districts also have 10-year district im plementation plans, which proj ect desired conditions for the forests decades into the future and show how the various management activities will be used to move basins toward those conditions. Annual operations plans will be available Feb. 14 at each district office and Salem head quarters. Written comments providing the most useful sug gestions should focus on one or more of the following: • Enhancing the consistency of an annual plan with the for est management plan and the district implementation plan. • Improving the clarity of an annual plan. • Providing new information that will affect an annual plan (such as location of a domestic water source or a cultural re source site). • Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of an annual plan or planned operation.
