By Schann Nelson O u r part of O regon is such a great place for gardeners to live. Even now, at the be g in ning of w in te r you can already see the signs of the approach of spring if you look clo s e ly enough. On the filberts (hazelnuts, for you non-native speakers), the flow e r buds are already lengthening and w ill burst into long yellow bloom w ith ju st a few short days of sun next m onth. Buds also are beginning to sw ell on elderberry and w ild plum. For tho se of us w ho garden by mail, this tim e of year brings a m ailbox full of catalogues, both old and new varieties. For me, the real cha lle ng e is keeping m y orders in line w ith both my budget and m y ava ila ble space. R arely does anything look as good in my garden as it does in the catalogue pictures, but that m akes the few beautiful su cce sses all the m ore appreciated. N ow is the tim e to attem pt to get in shape for actual gardening, w hich m ay begin as early as next m onth. As w e age, ou r joints becom e less and less flexib le - and m ore and m ore unw illing to w ithsta nd the stress of digging, planting, pruning, pulling, etc. G iving yourself a bad case of ten do nitis in you r elbow or wrist, or' pulling a m uscle in yo u r back is N O T a good w a y to start the season. E specially since, once you have injured yourself, you have to sit around and look at all the w ork you c a n ’t do w hile you rest Page 7 and heal. C he ck w ith yo u r ph ysician, o r a q u alified trainer, fo r sp e cific exe rcises but here are a few suggestio ns. E asy exercises that strengthen and stretch the w rists, arm s and shoulders w ill help prevent injury to the se areas. M ake sure that you perform any exercise slowly, and w ith intention, concentrating on the m uscle you w ish to im prove. E xercise s can include any kind of push-up you are cap able of perform ing, using w eights to strengthen arm m uscles, and w orkin g on im proving the rotation and flexibility of yo u r shoulders. Your back, so ea sily injured w hile turning over that new garden bed, w ill be gre a tly helped by exe r cises that strengthen the core m uscles of the abdom en and low er back. S pecific exam ples of e xe rcises can be fou nd in a variety of videos, books, and on-line. You cou ld also prepare by joining the gym or taking a class, such as yog a or Jazzercise. M eanw hile, if you can get outside, there are things to do, including, pruning and d o rm a n t spraying of fruit tress, replacing m ulch that has blow n off, clea ning up dead flow e r stalks if not alre ad y do ne (I really need to -’ get out and do this!) and pulling up w eeds and grasses tha t are trying to grow w here you d o n ’t w an t them . In addition to p la n ning this y e a r’s garden and getting stuff ordered, houseplants need attention to w atering and fe rtiliz ing. Though te rrib ly tem pting , it’s too early to start vegetable tra n sp la n ts indoors, but you can start m any flow ers as in d o o r plants, including im pa- tients, geranium s and coleus. S tay w arm , stay dry and en joy the season. AVAILABLE JANUARY 2003!
