In C o lu m b ia C ounty alone, the re are o v e r 80 ch ildren in sub stitute care, som e of w h o m w ill be re turn ed to th e ir p a ren ts or relatives, and som e of w ho m w ill be fre ed fo r adoption. Foster parents are reim bursed for the children’s living expenses, and health coverage is provided. T h e re are no fees for those w ho adopt through the state, and assistance is available fo r those w ho adopt children w ith special needs. F o ster o r adoptive parents can be single, m arried o r d i vorced. T h e y can w ork inside or o u ts id e th e ir hom e, have ch ildren of th e ir own o r not. F o ste r and adoptive parents need to be caring, patient, fle x ible and possess a sense of hu mor. T hey do not need a large incom e, just a large heart. Tickets are $25 pe r person and can be purchased in S ca p poose at Beds Plus and at the Rural O rganizing P roject O f fice, 33421 SW M aple St. T ick ets can also be purchased in St. H elens at the St. H elens Book Shop. A purchase of eight tickets w ill reserve a table for the event. This com m unity din n e r is the sixth of its kind. K aleidoscope Aw ards will be presented to an individual and a group w ho are w orking to carry on the m ission statem ent of C C C H D . M oney raised from this y e a r’s event w ill be used fo r C o lu m b ia C o u n ty hu m a n d ig n ity p ro gram s and education. T he din ner is also a collection point fo r the C olum bia Pacific Food Bank, and attend ees are asked to bring canned o r non- perishable food to the dinner. This y e a r’s dinner, with a S outhw est them e, w ill feature a din n e r professio nally planned and prepared by guest chefs and high school cate ring s tu dents, w ith help fro m C C C H D com m ittee m em bers. All p ro fe ssio n a l service s are being donated. The din ner of colorful, mild southw est regional fare w ill b e gin w ith blue corn m uffins w ith chile and cheese. The m ain c o u rs e is A n ch o c h ic k e n b re a s ts w ith C u m b e rla n d Sauce, fiesta rice and roasted vegetables. In addition there w ill be a S o u th w e st C aeser Salad, and a dessert of fresh fruit w ith lim e sauce. Coffee, tea and a no-host bar are ava il able. Follow ing the dinner, there w ill be a half-hour perform ance by the C olum bia C horale and a short presentation by M ichael Ray, local N ative A m erican sto ryteller.
