Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, November 21, 2002 Obituary MELISSA K. NARUP Melissa Katherine Narup, 87, Van couver, Wash., died November 4, 2002. Funeral services were held November 7, at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with the Rev. C. Eugene Sabin officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Roy. Miss Narup was born November 18, 1914, in Banks, to John and Catherine Mauss Narup. She grew up in Banks and graduated from Banks High School in 1932. She was a self-employed caregiver who cared for a quadriplegic for 20 years. Miss Narup was preceded in death by a brother, Ferdinand; and a sister, Matilda Hall. Survivors include a niece and a nephew. Remembrances are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, Oregon Trail Chapter, 1311 NW 21st Ave., Port land, OR 97209. Cel ebration of life service was held No vember 9, at the Salmon Creek United Methodist Church in Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. DuPree was born October 3, 1961, in Tacoma, Wash. She grew up in Hillsboro. She attended Concord Col lege in Portland and worked as a med ical assistant. She was preceded in death by a sis ter, Ellen Clifton, in 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Keri McNicholas of Portland; a son, Charles McNicholas of Denver, Colo.; her moth er, Sally DuPree of LaCenter, Wash.; her father, Al Clifton of Bend; three sis ters, Michelle Taylor of Vernonia, An gela Quilett of Hillsboro, and Jay Clifton of Redmond; five brothers, Michael of Vancouver, Wash., Joe of Everett, Wash., Jim Clifton of Memphis, Tenn., Damien of Aloha, and Darren of Port land; grandparents. Margaret McNi cholas of Beaverton, and Helen Clifton of Rockaway. Remembrances are suggested to a memorial fund in her name at Salmon Creek United Methodist Church in Van couver, Wash., to be used lor a youth camp scholarship fund. Davies Cremation and Burial Ser vice was in charge of arrangements. PALMA E. P. BARTLETT Palma Elaine Peck Bartlett, 65, Shady Grove, died November 1, 2002. Memorial services were November 9 at Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home in Hills boro. Inurnment was in Fir Lawn Ceme tery. Mrs. Bartlett was born September 14, 1937, in Oregon City, to Leonard and Olive Shaw. She grew up in Banks and graduated from Banks High School. She attended Oregon State University for a year. She married Robert Peck. They lat er divorced. She moved to Alaska and owned a clothing store in Palmer. She married Herb Bartlett and moved to Trail, near Shady Cove. She was a medical transcriptionist at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford and retired in 2001. Mrs. Bartlett was a member of King dom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Bartlett and a son, Bruce Peck. Survivors include two sons, Scott Peck of Banks and Brian Peck of Van couver; and a sister, Ruth Nelson of Vancouver, Wash. Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home of Hillsboro and Abbey Funeral in Med ford were in charge of arrangements. LOIS M. JOHNSON Lois M. Johnson, 72, Onalaska, Wash., died November 5, 2002. Grave side services were November 12 in Shoestring Cemetery and a memorial service in Napavine Assembly of God Church in Napavine, Wash., with Pas tor Wilbur Karch officiating. Mrs. Johnson was born May 26, 1930, in Watford, N.D., to Jake and Marie Talfson Berger. In 1946, she married Dale Johnson. They lived in Vernonia and Hillsboro. In 1958, they moved to Upper Lake, Cali fornia. They also lived in Elgin and Reedsport and, in 1962, moved to Win lock, Wash They moved to Portland in 1971, to Ketchikan, Alaska, in 1979 and to Onalaska in 1991. Mrs. Johnson worked there as a cook. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Christine Weiher of Onalaska, and Cindy Willey of Centralia, Wash.; two sons, Craig and Pierry, both of Onalas ka; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grand children; two sisters, Betty Rowe of Redwood City, Calif., and Joann Hodg son of Forest Grove; nieces and nephews. HOLEVAS Clara Marie Holevas, 80, Clatska nie, died November 6, 2002. Services were November 11, at Haakinson- Groulx Mortuary Chapel in Clatskanie, with Randle Hoxit officiating. Interment was November 12 at Murray Hill Ceme tery. Mrs. Holevas was born May 6, 1922, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to John Lymen and Minnie M. Graham Castle. She grew up in Jewell and graduated from Jewell High School. In 1959, she married Ernest Holevas. Survivors include her husband of Tillamook; two sons and a daughter, John E., Kenneth P, and Sharon S. Al- bertsen, all of Portland; a sister, Myrtie E. Buckhalter of Clatskanie; two broth ers, John Castle of Clatskanie, and Howard Graham of Astoria; four grand children and five great grandchildren. MARK J. LAUKKANEN Mark John Laukkanen, 56, Puget Island, Cathlamet, Wash., died Novem ber 9, 2002. A memorial service was held November 15, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Puget Island, with Pastor Cliff Waimer officiating. Inurn ment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr Laukkanen was born February 12, 1946, in Passlahti, Finland, to Einar Mikael and Katri Helena Rytkonen Laukkanen. On July 4, 1949, they im migrated to the United States through Ellis Island and moved to a Browns- mead dairy farm after a year in Sarato ga, Wyoming. He grew up in Knappa and graduated from high school in 1964. He received a scholarship to Clatsop Community College and earned his Associate of Arts degree in Forestry in 1966. In the 1960s, he be came a U.S. citizen and changed his name from Markko Johani Laukkanen to Mark John Laukkanen. In 1968, he moved to Cathlamet. He was a forester for Crown Zeller- bach, a timber cruiser and member of the timber acquisition team. In 1971, in Eno, Finland, he married Mirjami Pehkonen. He became a commercial snag div er in 1972 and, in 1978, he started his own timber cruising-consulting busi ness. He gillnetted, was a fish buyer and fish tender skipper in Alaska, and had a fish buying business, Laukkanen Seafood. In 1995, he began working for Banks Lumber Company as a timber buyer. Mr. Laukkanen was a volunteer fire fighter for Cathlamet Fire Department and the Puget Island Fire Department. He also served as port commissioner for Port District No. 2. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Heikki of Beaverton and Mikko of Los Angeles; two daughters, Kaisa of Chi nook, Wash., and Liisa of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Mikko E. of Brownsmead and Dr. Hannu of Forest Grove; and a sister, Lea Falter of Cas tle Rock, Wash. No services were held. Mrs. Crocker was born November 20, 1938, in Tillamook, to Howard and Maude Sherwood. She grew up in Cape Meares, attended grade school in Bay Ocean and high school in Tillam ook. In 1977, she married Kenneth N. Crocker. They moved to Hillsboro. She worked for New Leaf Greenhouse and retired in the late 1990s. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Suzi Azarak of Phoenix, Ariz., Beverly Corley of Ver nonia, Therese Davis of Forest Grove; a stepson, Ken of Shoshone, Idaho; three stepdaughters, Vicky Carignan of Sandy, Amy Nielson of Carson, Wash., Stacy of Sandy; several grandchildren; two brothers, Buck Sherwood of Lake- view, Bob Sherwood of Clatskanie; two sisters, Shirley Redicopp of Cloverdale, Carol Sherwood of Clatskanie.
