Class of ‘03 sets Fall Carnival at WGS
National essay contest for students
A Fall Carnival will be held
on Saturday, November 16,
from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the
Washington Grade School
gym. Sponsored by the Ver
nonia High School Class of
2003, there will be several ac
tivities for children, including a
cakewalk, face painting, free
Letters About Literature, a
national essay contest, invites
students to write a letter to an
author, living or dead, explain
ing how that author’s work
changed the student’s way of
thinking about the world. The
contest began October 1 and
throw contest and much more.
There will also be Bingo for
adults.
Proceeds from the carnival
will help raise funds for the an
nual senior class trip to South
ern California.

There are three levels of
competition: Level I for stu
dents in grades 4 through 6;
Level II for students in grades 7
and 8; Level III for students in
grades 9 through 12. Judges
will select a winner at each lev
el and the national winner will
receive a cash award. In addi
tion, the top essayist in the
state on all three levels will be
selected and receive a cash
award. The state winners will
be honored at a celebration
during National Library Week,
April 6 through 12, 2003.
