Vernonia, said at the meeting
that she initially had some con
cerns about providing ade
quate drainage and being able
to free a city employee to par
ticipate just before Jamboree.
However, since ODOT com
pleted all of the grading, she
said that it was important to
take advantage of the opportu
nity to train city personnel and
support the school district.
Sykes said in an interview after
the board meeting, that the
project was the beginning of a
great collaborative relationship
between the city and the school
district. This type of project cre

taxpayers’ money, while ac
complishing projects that bene
fit the community as a whole,
according to Sykes.
Vernonia Superintendent of Schools Mike Funderburg, right,
worked along with the ODOT, school district and city em
