The Izaac Walton League Kid’s Fishing Derby kicks off the Jamboree weekend, Friday night, August 2, at Vernonia Lake. This event has been a favorite of participants and spectators. Registration is at 4:00 p.m. The competition begins at 5:00 p.m. and con tinues until 7:00 p.m. Children compete in a num ber of categories, including the most fish, or the largest fish. There will be six winners in each of the following age groups: children five years and under, six through nine years, and 10-14. In addition to the six winners in each age group, there will be a prize for having the longest fish. Crappie, blue gill and perch are the only fish eligible for this competition. Participants are expected to supply their own bait and tackle. Children five years and under may be assisted by an adult in baiting their hooks and/or removing fish from the hooks, but the children must catch their own fish. The participants of the Fishing Derby aren’t the only ones who have a good time, though. Spectators are also entertained as the excited chil dren watch their catches being measured and counted. There are many prizes for winners in the competition, including sleeping bags, fishing poles or other gear, and tro phies for the winners, but no child will leave empty-handed. Participants will each get a popsicle. The Jamboree Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Nehalem Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and is co sponsored by The INDEPEN DENT, Dennis Electric, Inc. and Vernonia Hardware.
