The O regon Unclaim ed Property Law requires financial institutions to find owners of safe deposit boxes when box rent is past due. If they can’t lo cate the owner after two years, the bank or credit union must send the contents to the Trust Property Section of the Division of State Lands. The section staff attempts to locate owners. She said that staff is working to find owners of safe deposit boxes sent by fi nancial institutions in late 2000. Examples of the contents from some of the boxes in clude: Ernest D. The list includes a form that people complete if their name appears. The list will be posted through June 28. Gladden suggested that people without Internet access check with their local public library or community college for access. Due to heavy demands on the section's small staff, they can’t accept telephone inquiries, she noted. Proceeds from sale of safe deposit box items unclaimed by owners or heirs are held for claim by the owners or heirs forever. Gladden encouraged every one to search the section’s complete database. It contains names of people for whom an, unclaimed property has been reported, such as uncashed payroll or dividend checks, util ity deposits, and savings or checking accounts. There is no charge for the search, nor to file a claim. The database contains more than 710,000 names with accounts valued at nearly $163 million. “We add hundreds of names to the site each month, so it’s important to check it regularly,” Gladden said. Click “Unclaimed Property” on the Web site listed above. The site contains more detailed information as well as links to other states’ unclaimed property programs at www.un- claim ed.org. The site also pro vides advice about dealing with individuals who attempt to re unite ow ners with their un claimed assets for a fee.
