The INDEPENDENT, June 20, 2002 Patriotic Jamboree theme selected “Proud to Say, Vernonia USA” is the theme selected by the Vernonia Friendship Jam boree Committee for the 46th annual festivities. Jessie John ston of Birkenfeld submitted the winning entry and will receive a $50.00 U.S. Savings bond for her efforts. Page 9 Georgia Pacific gift provides computers for non-profit agencies including Vernonia Cares United Way of Columbia County, like other not-for-profit organizations, relies on dona tions of money and materials from businesses and individu als. Recently, when notified that Georgia Pacific might have some old computers available, the information was shared with member agencies and, in no time, there were requests for 38 computers. This information was sent to Amber Krause at Georgia Pa cific, requesting any assistance they could offer in filling this huge order. The result is 20 computers to help fill the requests received from United Way of Columbia County and its member agen cies. United Way received two computers; the other recipients include Vernonia Cares (1 com puter), Columbia Community Mental Health (10), Turning Point (1), Community Action Team’s Caring Options pro gram (2), Community House family homeless shelter in Longview (2), and Progress Center, which provides early in tervention services for children with special developmental needs (2). Lifejacket Lending program being organized for water safety efforts With summer weather, much time will be spent in or around the water. Many children and adults in the Vernonia area have limited swimming skills and no access to life jackets. A Lifejacket Lending pro gram is planned to help provide lifejackets to those in need. Similar programs have been started in small towns across the nation. With thirty bands on two stages, in three days, The Al ternative Stage provides a rare opportunity to see a rich variety of talent in an outdoor setting. An addition to this year’s Stage is the Alternative Golf Tournament, Aug. 3 at the Ver nonia Golf Club, with trophies awarded on-stage for first, sec ond and third place.
