I Page 20 T h e IN D E P E N D E N T , J u n e 20, 20 0 2 Herbicides will be applied alongside county roads I The Columbia County Road Department applies herbicides to roadside vegetation each year to help control weeds, brush and grasses that can cre ate motorist safety concerns, cause damage to vehicles, or invade the road surface. In the Spring of each year, the Road Department applies herbicides to roadside shoul ders to control horsetail, grass es and other broadleaf weeds. All herbicides used by the Road D epartm ent have been ap proved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and all employees who apply the herbicides are licensed by the Oregon Department of Agricul ture and have annual training to maintain the license. Due to budget and m anpow er constraints, only selected roads are treated with herbi cides. The shoulder application is usually on those roads with higher traffic volumes. Property owners who do not want herbi cides applied to frontage along th e ir property may sign an agreement to maintain road side vegetation, then signs will be provided along the road to notify the sprayers where to stop the application. For the past several years, the chemicals applied to road side shoulders have been Oust and Roundup. The chemical used by the Road Department for broadleaf control has histor ically been Garlon 4. Informa tion about these chemicals is available for review in the Road Department office. In the Fall of each year, and som etim es in Spring, herbi- cides are applied to the bank- slopes of selected roads to control broadleaf weeds such as blackberries, thistles and Scotch Broom. The herbicide applied controls broadleaf weeds, but allows grasses to grow. The County also uses tractor-mounted brush cutters to chop the vegetation, but can not keep up with the springtime growth. Many studies show that the cost of vegetation control with herbicides is less than half the cost of control with brush- cutters. All chemicals are applied by a modern, com puterized, chemical-injection spray vehi cle that is calibrated and accu rate to one-foot increments.
