The official community name “Banks” has a history that cov ers a century and reaches back 100 years in O regon’s history. It is most fitting that this occasion be celebrated and part of this year’s centennial observance in the community of Banks. Kathie E. Banks Elem entary School has received a $15,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation. Vogel said the grant will be used in the after school program to help stu dents meet state standards. Grant funds will provide for su pervision, snacks and trans portation. High school students will be able to apply for work supervising and tutoring stu dents in the grade school. An after school snack and trans portation home will also be pro vided with grant funding. Vogel praised the efforts of instruc tional aide Kristin Hilton in ap plying for the grant. An AmeriCorp volunteer will be helping students in reading and math in the junior high next year, Principal Mark Everett told the board. The largest class ever promoted, 124 stu dents, will be the freshm an class at Banks High School next year. According to Everett, some staffing changes will be required as this large group moves through the system. Athletic Director Jim Smith said that 2001-2002 was a very successful year for Banks High School athletes. Every season had more than one team play ing in a state level competition. Overall, 14 athletic teams or activities com peted at state competitions including football, volleyball, wrestling, boys and girls swimming, cheerleading, choir, dance, equestrian, base ball, softball, boys and girls track, golf, FBLA and FFA. Several board members commented on the success of graduation June 7th. The board unanimously praised the effort and ambition of the administra tive team to provide a positive experience for students in the Banks school system . The board approved a salary sche dule for adm inistrators and non-bargaining employees with a tw o-percent step increase and a two-percent CPI/Cost of Living adjustment.
