The INDEPENDENT, May 16, 2002 Page 5 Free workshops on new North Coast agricultural water management plan Three free w orkshops have been scheduled in C olum bia County to discuss the North Coast Agricultural W ater Q uali ty M anagem ent Area Plan (SB 1010), which went into effect on January 1. The w orkshops are open to all interested people and may provide im portant in form ation for property owners. They are sponsored by the C o lumbia Soil and W ater C onser vation District and OSU Exten sion Service. How new rules and com pli ance issues may affect individ ual landowners will be high L lighted in the workshops. Also covered will be what land prac tices assure protection for w a ter quality; how to get assis tance in designing and im ple menting a conservation/water quality plan; how to take advan tage of available technical pro gram and cost-share a s s is tance; and methods to assure that regulations remain within the scope of a “voluntary pro cess to address w ater quality.” Rural landowners with re source issues that adversely in flue nce w ate r quality, m ust show that they are taking steps •> eo n etti s P iz z a & G r ill Back by Popular Demand the M in i P izza Just Right fo r You!!! The workshops will provide sugges tions to address and resolve such issues, in a voluntary manner. Columbia SWCD, watershed councils and partner agencies are working hard to educate property owners regarding the changing rules toward protec tion of the environment, believ ing that a “voluntary" rather than an “enforcem ent” a p proach is the best solution to attaining a balanced, self-sus taining program for clean water. The first workshop was held May 7 at the Colum bia Tech Center in St. Helens. It was hosted by the Scappoose Bay W atershed Council. Tonight, Thursday, May 16, the Lower Colum bia River W a tershed C ouncil w ill host a workshop at the C latskanie Fire Hall, 280 SE 3rd, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Upper Nehalem W ater shed Council will host the third workshop in Mist. It will be held Thursday, May 23, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Mist-Birken- feld Fire Hall, 12525 Hwy 202. For more information, call the Columbia Soil and Water Conservation District at 503- 397-4555. Volunteers are needed to restart local land use advisory panel In most areas of Colum bia County, there are Citizen Plan ning A dvisory C om m ittees (CPACs) that study local land use activities and develop rec om m endations to the county’s Land D evelopm ent S ervices Wealth Building System Would you like to earn some extra CASH? Departm ent and the Planning Comm ission. This is a formal part of the citizen participation process and CPAC members are elected by residents in each district. There has been no CPAC in the Nehalem valley for a few years and volunteers are want ed who are interested in plan ning.
