Page 16 The INDEPENDENT, March 20, 2002 ORA J. BOLMEIER Ora Jean Bolmeier, 91, Forest Grove, died March 8, 2002. Graveside services were held March 11 at Ver nonia Memorial Cemetery, with the Reverend John Cahill, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Vernonia, offici ating. Concluding rites and interment were at the cemetery. Mrs. Bolmeier was born February 20, 1911, in Fargo, North Dakota, to Andrew and Martha Finney Hammerud. She grew up in Fargo. In 1936, she married Wesley L. Bolmeier. They lived in Erie until 1946, when they moved to Vernonia. She received her Bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State and a Mas ter’s degree in education from Pacific University. She taught liberal arts, in cluding English, Latin and American history, at Vernonia High School and also served as Dean of Girls. She re tired from teaching in 1973, then worked at Vernonia City Hall for ten years. Mrs. Bolmeier was officially recog nized for her community support and volunteerism when a city park on O-A Hill was named in her honor. She was also a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and was recognized in Who’s Who in Education. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974. Survivors include a daughter, Gretchen Bush of Hillsboro; a son, Linn of Beaverton; a sister, Lois Nelson of Vernonia; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the Vernonia Public Library. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home of Vernonia was in charge of arrange ments. LAURA J. BEALE Laura Johanna Beale, 83, died March 5, 2002. No service was held. Mrs. Beale was born June 20,1918, in Mohall, North Dakota. She moved to Vernonia in 1938 and to Portland in 1952. She was a production worker at Tektronix for 25 years. In 1963, she married Francis S. Beale. He died in 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Kay McCrory; a son, James McCrory; and four grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to Willamette View Foundation. Portland Memorial was in charge of arrangements. DEAN MALLER Dean Mailer, 63, Hillsboro, died March 9, 2002. A funeral was held March 13 in Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home. Interment was in Valley Memor ial Park. Mr. Mailer was born March 31, 1938, in Forest Grove. He graduated from Banks High School and attended Lower Columbia College in Kelso, Washington. In 1959, he married Ann Scales. He served in the National Guard for six years. Mr. Mailer was a log truck driver for Mailer Bros, for 45 years. He was an owner of the company for the past three years. He was a member of Hillsboro Moose Lodge and Active 20-30 Club. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wally of Hillsboro, and Randy of Banks; a daughter, Vicky Miller of Aloha; two sisters, Marianne VanDomelen of Banks, and Verna Lea Stinger of Rainier; a brother, Jim of Banks; seven grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to Washington County Hospice, 427 SE Eighth Avenue, Hillsboro, OR 97123 or to Washington County Special Olympics, 19010 SW Shaw, Aloha, OR 97006. Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. NORMAN S. SMITH Norman Stan Smith, 82, Banks, died March 10, 2002. A funeral mass was held March 15, at Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort, with the Rev. Joseph Heuberger, celebrant. Graveside service was March 16 in Vis itation Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born April 19, 1919, in Banks, to William and Wilhemia Ker- sten Smith. He grew up in Banks and graduated from Banks High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight engineer and top gunner in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. In 1952, he married Geneva A. Ash er Kemper. They lived in Forest Grove for four years, then moved to Banks. He worked as a broker for Girard's Lumber Company in North Plains for several years. From 1952 to 1960, he operated the Red, White and Blue Store in Banks. In 1960, he bought the Big Chief Grocery Store in Banks and operated it until retiring in 1972. Mr. Smith was a member of the Ro man Catholic Church and of Cornelius Eagles Aerie 4177. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1989; and five sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Tam my of Banks; a step-son, Monte A. Kemper of Banks; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two broth ers, Joe of Beaverton, and Ervin of For est Grove; nieces and nephews.
