brick for Shay Park
To the Editor:
The first bricks for Shay Park
will be picked up this week and
delivered to the engraver. You
can still order a brick by calling
503-429-5201. The bricks will
be placed around the historical
Shay engine.
There is a sample brick in
the window of the old JC Pen­
ney building on the corner of
Bridge St. and Madison Ave., if
you would like to see what it will
look like. Thanks to all who
have ordered so far.

Planning underway
for Jamboree
The 46th Vernonia Friend­
ship Jamboree will be on Au­
gust 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The
next meeting of the Vernonia
Friendship Jamboree Commit­
tee will be March 14th, 7 PM at
the Washington Grade School
Library. Please mark your cal­
endars and plan to attend.
The Jamboree Committee is
inviting all businesses that di­
rectly benefit from the Jam­
boree to have an active role in
the planning and execution of
this year’s festivity. We are also
inviting civic groups, and other
interested parties to take on an
active role.
Last year the proceeds from
the Jamboree were distributed
to Vernonia Cares, Vernonia
Toys For Joys, Vernonia Senior

Center, Vernonia Pride and
Friends of The Library for
$500.00 each and the Vernonia
Booster Club Echoing Ever­
greens Youth Camp for
$250.00. We are confident we
will be able to distribute more
back into the community with
your help, and are looking for­
ward to seeing you on the 14th.

know you are interested in par­
ticipating this year.

I would like to thank every­
one for the support and help I
received in becoming a part of
Vernonia. The many “People”
who helped me to become car­
ing, in the way that it happened,
to pass along what I was given.

Generous mistake is
United Way benefit
listed the value of the trees and
stated that Mr. Fluhrer declined
to accept the value of the trees.
Therefore, they were sending
this amount with an added do­
nation from them to United Way
of Columbia County and asked
that we use it to “support the
good work we do in the county.”
The Board of Directors would
like to thank Richen Tree
Farms, Inc. for remembering
the county in which they do
business and tell them publicly
how much we appreciate their
thoughtfulness.

race, Beverly Stein continues
to step out in front of all the
candidates on the issues im­

Recently, we received a let­
ter from Richen Tree Farms,
Inc. with a check attached. The
letter explained that they had
mistakenly taken a few trees
belonging to Curt Fluhrer while
logging near Clatskanie. They
that an efficient state govern­
ment can achieve by support­
ing all of Oregon’s industries -
as well as encouraging the de­
velopment of new ones.
This was demonstrated on
February 1, when Stein brought
together 13 business leaders
from diverse areas of the econ­
omy and the state for her “Get
Oregon Working Again Round­
table.” While other candidates
get their ideas from books and
polls, Beverly Stein goes right
