Page 6 The INDEPENDENT, February 6, 2002 By Jacqueline Ramsay W e ll, well, the S e n io r ladies got the jump on Old Man Win ter. They ________________ h a v e been doing the spring house cleaning since the 19th of Jan uary. On the 20th, a lady voiced her opinion. She “wished it would snow". Low and behold, it snowed in the wee hours of the 22nd. Careful what you wish for, you just might get it. It kept me from my appointed rounds for three days. (I’m a chicken on slushy, snow blowing roads.) Lots of other folks took advantage of it, though, and started their spring cleaning in closets, store rooms and other hidy holes, bringing the center many new items. February Calendar: Business Meeting - Feb. 1 at 1:00 p.m. Open to public. Nutrition Meeting - Feb. 4 Committee only. Hearing Aid Dr. - Feb. 8 at 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. Sr. Center Valentines Lunch - Feb. 13 5 Area Luncheon - Feb. 25 Scappoose Senior Center Doll Club - Feb. 26 at 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sr. Center Several ladies and one gent took the Food Handlers test this month. Since there are still so many “Bugs” in town, you never know when you might be called in to a public kitchen to fill in. We are all saddened by the sudden passing of Gerri Baker. She will be missed. I notice winter is still with us. As the ladies cleaned out their store room this past week, they found a very unwelcome guest in a box they were emp tying. Where was the last time you found a Black Widow spi der? She was of good size and didn’t live long, I can assure you. Made us rather cautious plunging into other boxes, I can tell you. I can’t recall if I’ve ever found one around my house in the 16 years I’ve lived here. I thought it too damp. Visiting with Vernonia Cares folks the other day, I found they, too, are in need of some mas culine help. Someone that can lift and carry case goods, espe cially on freight day. They are open Tuesday and Thursday. Stop in and see them if you’ve got idle time. The center has had one gent come in and offer his time and talents to do several seemingly small, but necessary, jobs. A God-send to us - Thank you. We could use a pick up and driver to help us get our card board to the Sentry Market shredding machine, also. I know I get to feeling “nag- gy” telling you we need muscle help all the time, but I really don’t want to walk the street with a sandwich board on my back and have folks frowning at me. Also, this past week, some one left us a message (in ink) on the front of our building. Why, I’m not sure, but if you have an ax to grind, please be big enough to come inside and tell us to our face. Business Meetings are the first Friday of each month, or we can call a special council meeting. We’ve a couple going to put on our “Sun Porch” roof when the rain slows - Thank You.
