Page 12 I The INDEPENDENT, February 6, 2002 tetters to Ihn Editor From page 3 about the inability of human mothers to follow nature’s law and to wean their young, as do other species. My letter/article was about the lack of strin gency in education which does not encourage young people to accept the consequences of their actions/work. The “sensi tive” children I was speaking of are not those who have been fortunate enough to have had loving parents, but rather those who have not been encouraged to accept responsibility. I am afraid that, although Mrs. Janac shouldn’t make as sumptions about my upbring ing, I was indeed encouraged to be independent at an early age. I am, however, forever in debted to my Mother, the strin gency of w hose sm all-tow n South Dakota youth made her recognize that grow ing up abroad, with servants, was un likely to prepare us for the real world. From about the age of eleven on, she made sure that no one else should do our inti mate laundry, that the responsi bility for cleaning our rooms was ours alone, and that by turns, my siblings and I cooked the fam ily dinners on the cook's night out. We are all good cooks, even my brothers, and since I have been able to make my living in more than one pinch by cooking, as I said, I am thankful. I fear that the polemic on child raising is at least a hun dred years old, and having not raised children myself, it is not my place to judge Mrs. Janac’s techniques. I do wonder, how ever, at the efficacy of a method which has 30 and 40 year old “children” looking to their mothers for “protection.” We might consider the wis dom of [Khalil] Gibran’s immor tal words on children: “Your children are not your children... They come through you... yet they belong not to you... You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth... Let your bending in the A rche r’s hand be for glad ness...” Sincerely, Carol Sawyer Vernonia To learn from error is reasonable To the Editor: No one can now doubt that the event commemorated by Old No. 20 is regrettable in the history of both our municipality and our nation. The mere fact of Old No. 20’s publication is far less regrettable. But, its regret fu ln e ss is ju s t as ce rta in and Please see page 13 Obtuseness knows not the shame of its own ignorance.
