Recognition in the Renaissance program is earned with a grade point aver age of 3.6 or higher, an in crease in GPA of .5, or for per fect attendance. Each quarter Renaissance students receive T-shirts and their names are entered in a prize drawing. Student performers provided entertainm ent prior to the recognitions awards. “Subcom mittee” (Eric Weller, David Mc- Murtrey and Waylon Buchan) performed Carousel and Every thing I Do, and Jake Brock, ac companying himself on the pi ano, offered a moving rendition of Simple Man, portraying the anquish of being left behind af ter a relationship ends. Most of the audience, includ ing parents of the younger m u sicians, remained to enjoy the entire concert. Especially antic ipated was a performance by the Vernonia High School Choir, which had been asked to perform at the Oregon School Board C onvention’s Small Schools Association breakfast. The Junior High Band followed with a perform ance of Dr. Rockenstein and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Their concluding piece, S lid in ’ the Blues, featured the trombone section. W ith the largest choir in many years, the twenty mem bers of the VHS acapella choir performed Let the Praise Go Round, followed by the tradi tional Deck the Halls, then Le Rose, Fronde Fiori, which was sung in Italian. The Joy o f Love, then Soli Deo Gloria, sung in Latin, concluded a polished performance. The concert concluded with a rousing performance by the VHS Band. The first two pieces performed highlighted the tal ents of different sections of the band, with The Emissary Fan- Fare showcasing the horn sec tion, and Annabel Lee featuring w oodw ind perform ers. S o l d ie r’s P rocession and The Sword Dance were next on the program. Providing a rousing conclusion to the evening was The Great Locomotive Chase, a musical portrayal of the theft of a locomotive by the Confed erate Army and their journey as they pulled up track and, literal ly, burned their bridges behind them. Vernonia schools set holiday programs W ashington and Lincoln G rade S chools will present their holiday program on Tues day, Dec. 11, in the WGS gym. The holiday program at Mist School has been scheduled for Monday, Dec. 17.
