Mar tinez were honored at Manage ment and Training Corpora tion’s (MTC) annual awards banquet with Participant of the Year awards. Harrington’s Clothing, of St. Helens, was honored with an award for Commitment to Service. Patterson, of Vernonia, has been involved with MTC’s Sum mer Youth Program two years Thirty youth involved in summer work program for young people Thirty Columbia County stu dents participated in this year’s annual summer work program operated by Management and Training Corporation (MTC). Teens worked in Scap poose, Rainier, St. Helens, Clatskanie, Vernonia, at Camp Wilkerson and on Sauvie Is land, learning many new skills and gaining experience for fu ture career choices. Work experiences were pro vided through participating or- ganizations/partners including R.E.A.C.H., Oregon Depart ment of Forestry, Vernonia Public Works, the Scappoose Library, CCTV, Columbia Coun ty Education Campus, OYCC and Management & Training Corporation. In Vernonia, crew members worked with the Public Works Department, cleaning up and doing maintenance work at Air port Park, installing a wrought iron fence around the engine at Shay Park, helping develop primitive camp sites at Vernon ia Lake, painting and flushing fire hydrants, striping streets and painting curbs. The Sauvie Island crew cre ated trails that will be used dur ing the Lewis & Clark Bicenten nial in 2003. An Art Project crew learned how to produce clay and con crete stepping-stones, Native American-style petroglyphs, and hanging wall planters. MTC’s Community Service crew landscaped the entry and surrounding area at the Colum bia County Fairgrounds, then, while renovating a little league baseball field, built a deck, re placed or repaired several roofs, built steps, installed sheetrock, painted, dug trench es and installed a french drain, replaced flooring, and more. They also assisted the Colum bia Pacific Food Bank several times. MTC’s summer youth pro gram offers opportunities for both youth and businesses in Columbia County. The youth gain valuable work experience and high school credit needed to continue their education. The businesses receive moti vated employees they might otherwise not have been able Vernonia Director of Public Works Robyn Bassett with Eric Patterson, to hire. By participating in pro grams provided by MTC and collaborating partners (Oregon Youth Conservation Corp, Co lumbia County Education Cam pus and the Youth Transition Program), young people start developing and recognizing the skills necessary to become contributing members of our communities. He worked on various projects, is full of enthusiasm and can be counted on to get the job done. Patterson graduated from high school this year and his hard work paid off when he was hired as a full-time employee with Vernonia Public Works in September. Martinez attended MTC’s Employment Skills Class and completed welding courses at Lower Columbia College. He passed the Washington Associ- ation of Building Officials tests and is now working at Hollinger Construction in Longview. Harrington’s Clothing has held a unique partnership with MTC for several years. With only a phone call, MTC can arrange for clients to obtain work/interview related items and take them home the same day. Don and Kim Harrington are always willing to help the customer find the appropriate clothes and shoes for their in terview or new job.
