Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, November 7, 2001 CIM Recognition honors students who meet state requirements The Vernonia School District honored stud en ts’ a ch ie ve ments in meeting state acade mic standards during the 2000- 2001 school year in a w ell-at tended CIM Recognition Night on October 24. Students re ceived awards for successful perform ance on both state tests and classroom work sam ples in one or more subject ar eas. Those attending were w el comed to the high school gym with m usic perform ed by Mackenzie Carr, Charles Gen- dronm, Antonia Montanus and Adelaide Schmitt. The Vernon ia High School Choir opened the ceremony with a perfor mance of the Star Spangled Banner and later sang the me diaeval hymn, Soli Dea. The evening also included a perfor mance by the Vernonia Com munity String Orchestra con ducted by Madeline Gendron, and composed of Charles Gen dron, Brittany Murray, C eila G endron-H erndon, Yolanda G endron-H erndon, Alissa Gardner, Juliana Pelster and Carol Pelster. Robyn Cochran, the district’s Curriculum Director, gave the district’s first PowerPoint pre sentation explaining the CIM, benchmarks and the CIM im plementation timeline. Students were recognized at the cere mony for their performance last year on state tests and on classroom work samples at the benchm ark levels in grades three, five, eight and ten. Cochran ended her presenta tion by saying that this year the district was proud to recognize 36 fourth graders, 29 sixth graders, and 41 high school students. W ashington Grade School Principal Kirk Sherrill and Vice Principal Anne Kingsley started the presentation of aw ards. These went to students who successfully met the first benchmark, in the third grade last year. This ye a r’s fourth íumberíacfc' & graders receiving awards for meeting the standard in math, were Laci Bowman, Cody Uer- ling and Jacob Dixon. Brianna Alexander met the standard in English. The first benchmark in English and Math was met by Siera Roberts, Katie Stevens, Brandon G ilbertson, Collin Moeller, Wayne Fogel, Callie Johnston, Dillon Vaughn, Karly Dewitt, Dollyanna Mudd, Chris Bamburg, Alex Lende, Dakota Burch, Chris Bero, Tony Dotter, Amy Rethwill, Tiffany McNeil, Levi Timmerman, Zach Shaw, Audra Terrill, Lita Foster, Adrian East, Joshua Hovey, Preston Roach, M elissa Sandstrom , C alvin Barnes, Tim Brown, Katie Wilson, Peyton Chesley, C harles Tungwenuk, Dillon Snyder, Zack Dillon and Danny Vanderschelden. Receiving awards for suc cess at the second benchmark (this year’s sixth graders) in English were Miranda Bunter, Eric Strand, Michael Calhoun, Ashley Eastlick and Brittany Vil larreal. M athem atics awards were earned by Alyssa Bruck- en, Jolene Botche, Jessie Devine, Ben Bamburg, Leah Seabring, Conner Flynn, Shan dy Cota, Perry Gomez, Laura Terrill, W illie Carroll, Matt Threet, Mackenzie Carr, Aaron Puera, Cari Shaw, Alex Gould, Kevin Cook and Brandon Kozachenco. Meeting the benchm arks in both English and Mathematics were Elise Blum, Jeramy Lende, Shawn W estlake, H eather Bassett, Kelsey King, Sandi Bevans, and Cody Kammerman. Vernonia High School Princi pal Mike Durbin and Vice-Prin cipal Jane McClellan presented awards to freshmen who suc cessfully met the third bench mark last year, while in the eighth grade. In addition to English and Math, eighth grade requirements include testing in Science. Kevin Swayze and Kim berly Bernardi received awards for success in English, $ m a r ty Seniors earning the CIM included, from left to right, Charles Gendron, Liana Traylor, Alexan dria Hayes, Brass Sears, Katie Prpich, Rose Peets and J.P. Allison. Not pictured is Melissa Templin. Michael Hensley received an award for Mathematics. Jen nifer Busch, Jessica Dupuis John Ogden, Jodi Reynolds and Torin Tierney received awards in Science. Freshmen meeting the standards in two subject areas were Rebecca Knowlton, Natalie Romback and Gina Cropp for English and Science; Tiffany Cutright and Rocky Jones for English and Math; Jordan Harrison, Royd Johansen and Kyle Elliot for Math and Science. Receiving awards for all three subject ar eas were Shirea Ray, Kyle Suess, Alex Barton, Luke En- neburg, Ashley Forster, Chri stopher Richardson, Brandi Johnston, Brandon Puera, Eliz abeth Bobbit and Zack Rum- bolz. Students’ first opportunity to test at the fourth benchmark level and achieve the CIM, is in their sophomore year. Addition al opportunities are offered in the junior and senior years. Megan Pattison received an award for successfully meeting the standard in English and the following students were recog nized in Science: Paul Orlando, Shawn Robertson, Jaki King, Josh Ward, Holly Murphy, Jor dan Love, David Koch, Marcus Kintz, Jennifer Kinney, Mathew Kelly, Charlie Hansen, Alex Kin ney, Shane Cutright, Rachel Bentson, Aaron Hunt, Casey Waltz, Adam Tanner, Katarina Hall, Shilo Stevens, John Wal ters, Jesse Borst and Edith Nel son. Successfully achieving the fourth benchmark in science and math were William Hales, Jacob Corey, Alex Dinger, Heather Forster, Michael Jenk ins, Emilee Suess, Kim Nor- mand, Stephanie Hein and Eric Weller. Darcy Kunkel met the benchmark in English and Sci ence. The climax of the evening was the presentation of the Certificate of Initial Mastery to nine students.
