A new business in the area now makes it easy for livestock owners to get fresh feed in pel let form - it’s even delivered free within 25 miles of Buxton. Jim Sorenson started pur chasing used equipment last fall, made the necessary modi fications and opened Buxton Feed Co. on July 10 with his first pelletized feed for horses, cows, sheep, goats and lla mas. Sierra Pellet is a combina tion of alfalfa, grass hay, corn and oats ground together and pelletized in a formula that pro vides 12 percent protein. Other combinations provide more or less protein, as needed, such as omitting the grass hay for horses and increasing the pro tein. Sorenson is also willing and able to make custom blended feed to meet specific needs. “Every precaution is made to ensure the highest quality in the manufacturing of our pel lets,” Sorenson emphasized. Sierra Pellets also contain a mold inhibitor and are flavored with a caramel-cherry syrup. “Our black angus love it,” he said, “they even drool!” Buxton Feed Co. is not a store, Sorenson said, and can’t T im b e r la n d s closed to public Severe forest-fire danger has forced closure of nearly all Columbia County commercial timberlands to public access, including hunting. However, customers can arrange to pick up freshly made orders at the company’s Pongratz Road location, or Sorenson will deliver orders of a half-ton or more. (When The IN D EPEN D ENT was there, Sorenson had just arranged to deliver three tons of feed to a llama farm near Sacramento, Calif.) The minimum purchase is 10 bags of feed at $6.50 per bag. With the purchase of a half-ton, the price goes down to $5.85 per bag. Sorenson is still employed full-time at Intel, but plans to re tire in about two years, then de vote more time to the feed business. Until then, his son, Beau, helps out when he’s home from college. Correct address needed to receive “Kicker” check The Oregon Department of Revenue wants to make sure that this year’s kicker checks get to Oregon taxpayers in plenty of time for the holidays. In 1999, over 15,000 taxpayers had their checks delayed be cause of incorrect mailing ad dresses. “Taxpayers who have moved since filing their 2000 returns need to give us updat ed addresses. W e’d like to know about name changes, too," said Sandy Bradley, the departm ent’s kicker project manager.
