I didn’t see too many hands out there, but I must ad mit, while I was observing one last week way out back on our property, I found it quite en lightening. Perhaps we can learn a few lessons from those busy little creatures. I was particularly fascinated by watching two ants work to gether to carry a stick much larger than themselves, up a steep dirt pile. As one would drop out, another would appear and take his place. This contin ued on as they replaced and helped each other reach their goal. No bickering, no accusing and no competition. They just worked...together. Hmmmm. Say, do you like our new Final Jam boree meeting slated paint job as much as we do? We have Bobby Joe Sumpter, Vance Sumpter and Scott Johnson of Portland to thank for it. Our new bus is here and running. As of this writing, our first trip was Friday, June 22, to the new Oregon Gardens in Silverton. We will have a more complete report next time. This 20 member volunteer committee makes recommen dations to the Board of County Commissioners regarding the expenditure of state and feder al funds for programs and serv ices for children and their fami lies in Columbia County. Lay representatives are needed from the Clatskanie, Rainier and Vernonia areas. Only a few months old, the Friends of the Vernonia Public Library is moving forward in their efforts to assist our local library. Membership is at 37, with many people involved in various committees. A constitu tion, by-laws and vision state ment have been adopted, and an application for non-profit tax status is underway. Membership is open to Ver nonia residents for an annual fee of $5 per individual or $10 per family, renewable in Janu ary of each year. Presently, members are in volved in fundraising, helping with the summer reading pro gram, promoting the ongoing efforts of the library to expand current circulation and increase general knowledge of its serv ices to the public. Last minute donations for the book sale will be accepted Wednesday, July 25 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the old library building. For further information, call 503-429-1818. W elch will replace Edgar as next director of Vernonia Cares Sandy Welch has been ap pointed director of Vernonia Cares Inc., to replace Lisa Edgar, whose resignation will be effective August 1. Welch has lived in Vernonia all of her life and is married to Ron Welch of Cornerstone Construction. They have three children and four grandchil dren, all presently residing in Vernonia. As the new director, Welch will be using leadership skills developed over the years while teaching women’s bible study classes, as president and vice- president of Women’s Aglow, accountant for Cornerstone Construction and many other activities. Vernonia Cares board mem bers feel that Welch’s skills and positive outlook will help further the many positive steps taken to help local people in need.
