Page 18 - 2001 Vernonia Friendship Jam boree Community stunned as Mist Store burns to ground The community of Mist was in tears as the Mist Store, thought to be the oldest contin uously operating business in Oregon, burned to the ground in July. A faulty chimney allowed flames from burning trash to get up under the roof and the Enjoy the 45thJamboree old store, built in 1888 or ‘89, was almost totally involved in fire within minutes. Owner John Fitch vows to rebuild the store in a replica of the original structure. As soon as the shock wore off, the community started a fund raising drive to augment the insurance on the store, and help with the rebuilding of what has been a de facto communi ty center for a century.
