Logger of Year The Columbia County Log ger of the Year is for the sec ond year in a row, Longview resident Jim Horn. Coming into the 2000 Ver nonia Friendship Jamboree Logging show, Horn had earned 50 points in the other three shows on the circuit, and Aug. 6, he added 11 points to his score to come out on top with 61 points. All Around Logger Scott Whitehead trailed Horn coming into the final logging show of the season by 22 points, and although he added 14 points to his score that Sunday, he just couldn’t beat Horn. Whitehead came in second with 42 points, followed by Elsie resident Matt Samuelson and Greg Brewer of Clatskanie. Samuelson end ed the season with 38 points, and Brewer had 35. Whitehead and 2000 winners For the third time, Scott Whitehead of Tillamook has captured the title of Vernonia All-Around Logger, with a total of 24 points. Women’s Hard Hat Toss: Roberts, Cheryl Lettenmaier, Brandy Callio S p o r ts m a n s h ip award to Samuelson Matt Samuelson of Elsie was named recipient of the 2000 Max Sword Memorial Sportsmanship Award at the 2000 Jamboree Logging Show Aug. 6. Officials of the Jam boree Logging Show select the winner of the sportsmanship award. This is the second year that Samuelson has won this award. Fire season regulations are in effect in Northwest Oregon and there are few exceptions to outdoor burning. The following information will help eliminate confusion about what is and is n’t allowable at this time: • Recreational fires are al lowed at properly prepared res idential and recreational (parks, etc.) locations. They must be kept under responsi ble supervision and control at all times. • Barbecues are allowed, but briquets must be thorough ly extinguished with water. They can appear to be out, then flare up with a small breeze. • Trash and debris burning are not allowed regardless of whether the burning is done in the open or in a burn barrel. • Outdoor fires are not al lowed in any forested area. • Some areas in and around Vernonia are, or will be, posted prohibiting smoking and ATVs. • Tall grass and weeds that contribute to fire danger are a violation of City of Vernonia safety ordinances. It is best to cut them before they dry enough to create a problem. Property owners who fail to maintain a safe area may be cited and fined. If, at any time, the State Fire Marshall bans all outdoor burning, that will in clude a ban on recreational fires and barbecues.
