Following an undefeated season, Vandehey, a senior at Vernonia High School, placed first in the 171 lb. weight class with wins over wrestlers from Elgin, Neah-Kah- Nie and Powder Valley. Mack, a junior, brought home the sil ver medal, taking second place over competitors from Elgin, Glendale, Gervais and Crane. PCC classes in Vernonia, St. Helens Portland Community Col lege will be offering a Speech class in Vernonia during Spring term. SP 111 will help students prepare and present original speeches, with emphasis on organization and outlining. Stu dents will learn to present in formative, persuasive, and oth er types of speeches. This is a helpful class for anyone who speaks in groups. Prerequisite: Current enrollment in or com pletion of WR 121. The class will be held at Ver nonia High School, Room 10, on Tuesdays, beginning April 3, 6:30-9:20 p.m. Cost of the eleven-week course is $127.50 plus the cost of the textbook. (Books will be available at class). Pre-registration is en couraged, however, registra tions will be accepted at the first class. Earthquake damage closes gym Structural inspectors from Columbia County Land Devel opment Services, called by Clatskanie School Superinten dent Earl Fisher to evaluate po tential earthquake damage to Clatskanie Grade School, red tagged the gymnasium, halting its use for any purpose. The rest the school can be used unless further investiga tion indicates otherwise. Steve Winstead, a certified architect under contract with the county will conduct a follow-up analy sis to determine if any further closures are necessary. No damage was detected in any of Vernonia School Dis trict’s buildings. J e w e ll b o ard changes dates The Board of Directors of Jewell School District No. 8, Clatsop County, has changed the date of its regularly sched uled Board meetings. The Board will now meet on the third TUESDAY of the month at 7:00 pm. This change will begin with the March 20 meeting. Technology and the arts work well together for the Vernonia School District as high school students concentrate on computerized graphic arts. Instructor Doug Tesdal teaches this class in the Mac lab in the Washington Grade School Library. Outreach worker specializes in school absentees Vernonia School District stu dents who have been dropped from enrollment lists because of extended absences now have a helping hand to get themselves back on track. Gregg McVicker, a School Outreach Specialist with Co lumbia ESD, will be in Vernon ia every Friday to help students and their families solve prob lems that interfere with school attendance, regardless of what the problem may be. McVicker, who graduated from LaPine High School be fore working his way through Portland State University, will meet with students and/or their families at their homes to help them deal with a wide range of situations, including other pub lic agencies, past due utility bills and health concerns.
