The INDEPENDENT, March 7, 2001 Pagel 7 Obituary FATHER JOHN “ANTHONY” GUSSIN Father John “Anthony" Gussin, 85, Eagle, Idaho, who formerly served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, died February 19, 2001. A Vigil prayer service was held February 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vernonia. A funeral mass was held February 22, at St. Mary’s with Fr. W. Jonathan Decker of St. Sharbel Catholic Church in Port land and Father John Betts of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Albany, con-celebrants. In terment was at Mt Calvary Cemetery in Portland. Fr. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force, and was a prisoner of war for 1-1/2 years. He was discharged with recognition in 1945 as Staff Sargeant. He attended seminary at St. Mein- dard in Indiana, but left to care for his mother after she was injured in a car accident.During this time, he worked as a C.P.A. and regional supervisor for Mack Truck in Los Angeles. After his mother died in the 1960s, he attended seminary in Mt. Angel. He was or dained in the Roman Catholic Rite and retained his Maronite Catholic Rites identity. Father Gussin served as parish priest for St. Fredric Catholic Church in St. Helens for a few years and from 1971 to 1976, served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia. He then went to Spokane, Wash, where he served at the Karrios Prayer House. He served at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon and at St. Marion’s Church in Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked extensively with youth. He went to work at the Monastery of St. Anthony of the Desert near the Valley of the Saints in Beriut, Lebanon, where he lived as a hermit. After returning to the U.S., he served in Alaska, then toured Maronite Churches, giving con ferences and retreats. He returned to the northwest and established a house of prayer in Eagle, helped local parish es and was chaplain to the Catholic Workers group in Boise. Survivors include one sister, Sr. Al bina Gussin of St. Louis, Missouri. Private inter ment was held at Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro. Mr Rose was born May 23, 1936, in Vernonia, to James E. and Myrtie (Jenkins) Rose. He grew up in Vernon ia. He worked as a grain inspector for the U.S. Agriculture Department for many years. He was preceded in death by his son, Marvin J. in 1972. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela K. Rose of St. Helens, and Rita Young of Aloha; three brothers, Mancel of Long Beach, Calif., Derrel J. of Forest Grove, and Jack Greenwood of Vernonia; a sister, Dorothy Staight of Jacksonville; one grandson and many nieces and nephews. Vigil prayer servic es were held February 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia. A funeral mass was celebrated February 27, with Fr. James Stange, celebrant, assisted by Juanita Dennis, pastoral associate. Interment was at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Shirley was born May 19, 1930, in Kansas City, Kansas to Fran cisco and Eligia (Huerta) Sanchez. She grew up in Kansas City. She married Marion “Clarence” Shirley in 1966 in In dependence, Missouri. They lived in In dependence until 1967, when they moved to Vernonia. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Vernonia, participating in the annual quilt fair and cooking meals for many church activities. She also volunteered for the American Can cer Society in Vernonia. Mrs. Shirley was preceded in death I You're looking at by a son, Avery, in 1993; her husband in 1995; a brother and two sisters. Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Pennington of Vernonia, Debbie Grant of Bedford, Texas, and Denise Miller of Longview, Wash.; a son, Tony of Forest Grove; three brothers, Igna cio of Buena Park, Calif., Henry of San Antonio, Texas, and Johnny of Inde pendence, Missouri; two sisters, Helen Lynn of Liberty, Missouri, and Lupe Temple of Higginsville, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren; nieces and nephews. CRIPPEN M arnis Alfred Crippen, 92, M il waukie, died February 14, 2001. Fu neral services were held February 19 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with the Rev. C. Eu gene Sabin of the First Christian Church in Forest Grove officiating. In terment was at Mt. View Memorial Gar dens in Forest Grove. Mr. Crippen was born April 16, 1908, in Salem, to John and Lucy (Loop) Crippen. He grew up in the Rickreall area. He m arried Elinor Williams in 1944 in Kalama, Wash. They lived in Forest Grove, where he was a dairy farmer. He moved to Mil waukie in 1992. He was a 50 plus year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1984; a brother; four sisters; and a daughter, Wanda Witcher. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Gray of Hillsboro, Marna Crow ell of Bend and Sue of Hesperia, Calif.; two sons, Rod of Milwaukie and Mike of Banks; a brother, Dale of Salem; two sisters, Jean Leikas of Naselle, Wash., and Barbara Smith of Gresham; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. DYER Gladys Louise Dyer, 77, Salem, died February 9, 2001. A private family graveside service was held February 13 at Oceanview Memory Gardens in Coos Bay, with the Rev. Daniel Meyers of the First Presbyterian Church in North Bend officiating. Mrs. Dyer was born April 9, 1923, in Bend, to Emery D. and Minnie (Scott) Closner. They moved to Clatskanie in 1935. She graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1941. Funeral services were held March 2 at McKay Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hillsboro. Inter ment was in Fir Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Davis was born June 4, 1928, in Los Angeles, Calif. Her maiden name was Tooley. She was raised in the Salem and Myrtle Creek area. In 1954, she married George Davis. They lived in Manning until moving to Hillsboro in 1990. She was a member of the McKay Creek Ward of the LDS Church and a former member of the Banks Lions Club. She was active in the Boy Scouts of America for nearly 40 years. Mrs. Davis worked as a CNA for 40 years, in Portland, Hillsboro and Forest Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991. Survivors include three sons, Rich of Hillsboro, William of Cornelius and Harrison of Dallas; three daughters, Mary of Gales Creek, Margaret Loader of Hillsboro, and Nancy McLaughlin of Tigard; 19 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one great-great-grand- child; two sisters, Shirley Jean Gepner and Patsy Alice Jensen, both of Port land. WOLFE Ruby Lorraine W olfe, 74, died March 2, 2001. A funeral service was held March 7 in Lincoln Willamette Fu neral Directors. Interm ent was in Willamette National Cemetery. Mrs. Wolfe was born January 7, 1927, in Vernonia. She was raised in Portland. Her maiden name was Row lands. In 1946, she married Gerald Wolfe. He preceded her in death in 1984. Survivors include two sons, Ronald W. and Steven R.; a daughter, Teresa L. Walker; a brother, W illiam Rowlands; a sister, Edith Palin; 19 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. STREET VACATION \ Clatskanie areas before moving to North Bend about 1950. She moved to Salem after her husband’s death. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, JoAnn Clawson; one grandson and one great grandson. Survivors include three daughters, Lynda Hedberg of Salem, Donna Pres cott of Eugene and Carol Socia of Salem; a sister, Bette Best of Clatska nie; two step-children, Gladys Early and Thomas of Pennsylvania; 18 grand children and 21 great grandchildren.
