The public is welcome to attend this workshop; however, public comment will not be received The Region 1 Regional Workforce Board will meet on Thursday, February 8, 2001, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Fultano’s Family Pizza Parlor in Clatskanie, Oregon (770 East Columbia River Hwy.). Publish February 7,2001 Dear Vernonia - Our Family would like to thank the people of Vernonia for all of the help we received after our house fire in November. Although this was a tragic experience for us, we feel very fortu nate that we are surrounded by such wonderful people. Because of the generosity and caring extended towards us, we have been able to pick up the pieces and move forward. Never have we been witness to such a pulling together of community for those in need, let alone been re cipient to such a deed. We thank the Lord everyday that nothing truly important, meaning life, was taken, and we also thank the Lord that we found Vernonia when looking tor our new home in Oregon. So many have been so caring to us that we don’t feel we can ever say thank you enough. Hopefully one day we will be able to give back to this great community a little of the caring we’ve felt. For now, please accept our heart felt Thank You. (M o n obituaries on pago 1 2 ) GORDON P. “DON” FOSTER Gordon P. “Don” Foster, 52, Ver nonia, died January 28, 2001. A Memo rial Mass was celebrated February 2 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, with Father James Connelly, celebrant, assisted by Juanita Dennis, Pastoral Associate. Private interment was held. Mr. Foster was born July 21, 1948, in Redlands, Calif., to Gordon and Phyllis Foster. He grew up in Redlands. He attended two years of college in Honolulu, Hawaii, majoring in busi ness. He married Donna F. Zimmerman on March 18, 2000, the first wedding to be held at the newly renovated Scout Cabin in Vernonia. Mr. Foster owned and operated Rising River Ranch Retirement Home for eight years. He was a member of the Vernonia Chamber of Commerce, an active fund raiser for Northwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and was going to serve as president of the Vernonia Senior Citizens Center in 2001. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife; his moth er of Redlands; a daughter, Nicole K. Foster, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Virginia; a son, Michael of Redlands, step-chil dren, Kelly Barlow, Leah Zimmerman, Luke Zimmerman and Matthew Zim merman; five brothers, Dennis of Texas, Robert of Valencia, Calif., Rick and Joel, both of Redlands, and Jerry of Riverside, Calif.; three grandchil dren; many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Jan. 24 at Sunset Hills Memorial Park. Mr. McKedy was bom September 29, 1935 in Swan Tulip, Maryland. He served in the National Guard. He was an automobile mechanic. In 1975, he married Barbara Reedy. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brad of Beaverton and Scott of Hillsboro; three daughters, Wynona Keith and Tammy Cozart of Vancouver, Wash., and Charlotte Hawash of Hills boro; a sister, June Nooks of Okla homa; four brothers, Gordon of Col orado, James, Mike and Wendel of Vancouver; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Finley/Sunset Hills was in charge of arrangements. DONNA M. DAVIDSON Donna Marie Davidson, 75, Tuc son, Arizona, died November 27, 2000. Services were held. Mrs. Davidson was bom December 12, 1924, in Salmon, Idaho, to Walter and Ruth Wilson Stone. She grew up in Butte Falls and Adel. In 1942, she married Leonard Davidson. They moved to Hillsboro, where she owned and operated DD Ceramics, prior to moving to Tuscon. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances, and three brothers, Robert, Charles and Jack. Survivors include her husband; a son, Richard P. of Vernonia; a daugh ter, Debra Bartz of Seattle; four grand children; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Creel of Grants Pass; and a brother, Ron Stone of Klamath Falls. DONA LEE COTTAM Dona Lee Cottam, 74, Aloha, died January 5, 2001. No service was held. Disposition was by cremation. Mrs. Cottam was bom September 19, 1926, in Portland, to Kenneth and Margaret Sawtell. She graduated from Beaverton High School in 1944. She married Bruce Cottam in 1955. Mrs. Cottam lived in the Jewell and Astoria area from 1955 to 1998. She was a school secretary for the Astoria School District for several years and moved to Aloha in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998. Survivors include three sons, Michael of Dundee, Robert of Washou gal, Wash., and Paul of Lincoln City; and several grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to American Lung Association. LOLA D. DYE Lola Dean Dye, 76, Hillsboro, died January 22, 2001. Funeral services were held at Donelson, Sewell and Mathews Mortuary, with Pastor Peter Touhey of Helvetia Community Church, officiating. Interment was in Helvetia Cemetery. Mrs. Dye was born March 23,1924, in Rahea, Okla., to Roy and Cora Mil ner Stigleman. She moved to the Junc tion City area in 1937 and graduated from Junction City High School In 1943. She worked at the Greyhound Bus Depot for 35 years. She married Lowell Dye in 1961. She was an active member of Helvetia Community Church and a member of the Helvetia Women’s Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985. Survivors include two step-daugh ters, Ronna and Leann Dye of Wash ington; a brother, Bill Stigleman of Junction City; a sister, Leola Stigleman of Banks; and a special family, Steven, Robin, Collin, Erynn and Alexa Beeson of Portland. JUDEN Velma Jean Juden, 75, Gaston, died January 13, 2001. Funeral ser vices were held at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with Pastor Eric Schmitt of Wapato Val ley Community Church, officiating. In terment was in Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Mrs. Juden was born March 16, 1925, in LaComb, to Perry and Anna E. Seckman Retherford. She grew up in Buxton. In 1946, she married Roy C. Juden, Jr. They lived in Scoggin Valley and Gaston. She was a homemaker and an Avon representative for more than 40 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Forest Grove. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Survivors include her husband; four sons, William E. of Newberg, Danny R. of Hillsboro, Larry A. of Forest Grove and Douglas A. of North Plains; nine grandchildren and three great grand children. Memorial services were held at Camp Magruder, near Rockaway Beach. Vault interment was in Forest View Cemetery In Forest Grove. Mr. Woodford was born April 30, 1909 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Edgar and Alice Woodford. He graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1928 and earned a degree in electrical engi neering from OSC In 1932. He married Mary E. Gibson in 1936. They lived in Portland and he was part ner in a cabinet business. Then he jointed Uppinghouse Construction Company, which built churches and business offices around Portland. He volunteered at the Methodist Church’s Camp Magruder for 20 years after retir ing in 1973. WILLIAM L. WITHAM William Leslie Witham, 65, Aloha, died January 10, 2001. No services were held. Disposition was by crema tion. Mr. Witham was bom January 29, 1935, in Carbon, Iowa. He married Joanne Vanderevering in 1961. He worked for Hazel Nut Growers Ware house until retiring in 1997. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin and Lance of North Plains; a daughter, Julie Kidwell of Forest Grove; two sisters, Marge Silence of Riverton, Iowa and Lori Gayrel of Bend; and three brothers, Joe of Port land and Buster and Charles of Banks.
