The same is true when you ex perience major changes in your life, such as a new job, a pay raise, marriage, divorce or widowhood. To develop a good financial plan, you first need to under stand your current financial sit uation. Two tools come in handy when you want to re view your family’s current fi nancial situation: the net worth statement and the income and expense statement. A net worth statement is a picture of what you own and what you owe. It show the fair market value of your assets- things you own--and your debts or liabilities—that is, money you owe others. The difference between assets and liabilities is your net worth. An income and expense statement shows your income and how it was spent. Knowing income and expenses will help you adjust to financial changes. For example, what expenditures can and should be reduced or eliminated, when your income goes down? Conversely, what ex penditures should increase when income goes up? The OSU Extension Service has two brief publications that will help you prepare net worth and income and expense statements. He served in the U.S. N avy from 1942 through 1945. In 1949, he m a rrie d L orra ine DuBois in Portland. He continued his education at Lew is and Clark C ollege, w here he received his bach elor’s and m aster's degrees, then earned a D oc torate in Education Adm inistration from the U niversity of Portland. Mr. D uB ois w as an e le m e n ta ry school teacher, then served 16 years as a principal and 14 years as a su pe r intendent. He received m any aw ards for excellence in education. He w as past president of the H ills boro Kiw anis C lub and a m em ber of the Lions Club. He w as active in the Li ons Visions Program s. Mr. H eid lo ff w as born A pril 24, 1924, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Ben ja m in F ra n klin and E dna S o ph ia (Schuricht) Heidloff. He lived in Santa Cruz, until m oving to Longview, W ash., in his teens. In 1943, he joined the A rm y and served in Europe during W W II, in the Black Panthers, 66 Infantry Division. He m arried M axine C annaday in 1946 in Vancouver, W ash. They lived in Portland until m oving to H illsboro in 1948. He w orked as a plasterer and was a m em ber of local #82. He retired in 1986. In 1987, they m oved to W eis er, Idaho, and returned to H illsboro in 1990. They m oved to Vernonia in 1997.
