Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, December 20, 2000 Providence St. Vincent makes list of 100 top orthopedic hospitals Providence St. Vincent med ical Center has been named one of the nation’s top 100 hos pitals for orthopedic services by the HCIA-Sachs Institute and the Human Motion Insti tute. Providence St. Vincent is the only hospital in Portland and one of a handful in the state to rank as a national benchmark in 2000. The study, “100 Top Hospi tals: Orthopedic Benchmarks for Success,” identifies top United States hospitals that cate high-quality outcomes and have established benchmark efficient management of ortho performance in clinical services pedic care. The criteria include: and procedures that represent mortality index, risk-adjusted high risk to patients, high cost for severity of illness; complica to payers and high volume in tions index, risk-adjusted for hospitals. The list of top ortho severity of illness; count of pedic hospitals was published unique patients receiving or in the Nov. 27, 2000 issue of thopedic services; average length of stay at the hospital, Modern Healthcare magazine. Enforcement efforts and awareness campaigns are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s You Drink & Drive. You Lose, cam paign, created to help reach the national goal of reducing al cohol-related traffic fatalities to no more than 11,000 a year by 2005. The campaign targets high-risk populations such as 21- to 34-year-olds, those with a high blood alcohol content, repeat offenders, and under age, 15- to 20-year-old drinkers. “The greatest tragedy of im paired driving is that it is entire ly preventable,” said Captain Spirup. ‘There are several op tions available that we encour age the public to consider in stead of putting themselves in a position of being involved in a traffic crash, being arrested, and facing sanctions such as fines, license suspension, jail or community service as pre scribed by local courts.” The Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation suggest the fol lowing: • Designate a sober driver before you go out. • Call a taxicab or Safe Ride program. • Consider non-alcoholic al ternatives as part of your holi- tients who came from and were discharged to home. According to the HCIA- Sachs Institute, the nation’s top 100 orthopedic hospitals not only produce better patient out comes than their peers, but are approximately 20 percent more likely to discharge elderly pa tients home after hospital stays rather than institutionalize them -an important goal of high-quality treatment. The study results are avail able on the web at http:// www. 100TopHospitals.com. day celebrations. • Arrange to spend the night where you are going to be drinking. The Oregon State Police strongly encourages the use of our toll free number 1-800-24- DRUNK (1-800-243-7865) or 9-1-1 to report anyone you sus pect of being an impaired driv er.
