NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Public hearings are scheduled for No vember 16, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. before the Planning Commission of the City of Ver nonia and for November 20, 2000, at 6:00 p.m. before the Vernonia City Council to consider an application by Chris Liu for An nexation, Zone Amendment and Planned Development Subdivision for Tax Lot #4404-000-00101. The hearings will be held in the Council Chambers of Vernonia City Hall, located at 1001 Bridge Street, Vernonia, Oregon. The application is gov erned by ORS 222.110-222.183, ORS 197 and Vernonia Ordinances 710 and 711. The property is located on 32.92 acres off Mellinger Road outside Vernonia City lim its, but within the Vernonia Urban Growth Boundary, and is zoned R-10. The zone change is from R-10 to Planned Develop ment - Low Density Residential with a pro posed overall density of 2-1/2 lots per acre. Failure to raise an issue in a hearing, in person or by letter, or failure to provide statements or evidence sufficient to afford the decision-maker an opportunity to re spond to the issue precludes appeal to LUBA based on that issue. Public testimo ny is welcome, and written statements will be received before the hearing if you can not attend. JACOBS Martha Elizabeth Jacobs, 88, Banks, died November 9, 2000. Ser vices were held November 13 at Union Point Cemetery in Banks, with Rev erend C. Eugene Sabin of the First Christian Church in Forest Grove, offi ciating. . Mrs. Jacobs was born September 14, 1912, in Elsberry, Missouri, to Charles and Rosa (Knollhoff) Stewart. She grew up in Hamburg, Illinois. She married Howard Gilbert Jacobs in 1929. They lived in Hamburg until 1952, when they moved to Banks. She was ahomemaker and did seasonal work in the cannery in Banks. Mrs. Jacobs was a member of the Church of Christ in Forest Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971; two sisters, two brothers, two sons, Howard T. and Kenneth, and a daughter, Janet Cop ley. Survivors include a daughter, Mar garet Weaver of Banks; thirteen grand children; twenty-eight great-grandchil dren; ten great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. HERMENS Ida Marian Hermans, 91, Forest Grove, died November 7,2000. Recita tion of the Rosary was November 12 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Todd M. Molinari, celebrant. Interment was at Visitation Cemetery in Verboorfc Mrs. Hermans was bom December 11, 1908, in Verboort, to William and Wilhemina (Kersten) Smith. She grad uated from Greenville School and later attended St. Mary's of the Valley Catholic School in Beaverton, then worked as a housekeeper. She married Ernest Anthony Her mans in 1933. They lived in Verboort until 1962, when they moved to Banks. Mrs. Hermens owned and operated the Banks Cafe for over three years. Then, she worked for Copeland Lum ber Company in Forest Grove until 1972 and for the City of Banks Water Department as a bookkeeper until retir ing in 1992. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Nation al Order of Catholic Foresters for over 55 years. Her husband died in 1996. In 1999, she moved to Forest Grove. She was was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph; four sisters, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Richard of LaGrande; three daughters, Leanne LaBonte of Forest Grove; Louanne Bone of Forest Grove; and Louine Warren of Banks; three brothers, Nor man Smith of Banks; Ervin Smith of Forest Grove and Joseph Smith of Beaverton; twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. At his request, there were no formal services. Inurn ment was at Williamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Lachapelle was bom April 22, 1922, in Salem. He lived and worked in Timber during the glory days of log ging. He also owned Astoria-L.A., a lo cal seafood trucking company, for many years. Survivors include a host of family and friends. Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, Astoria, was in charge of arrange ments. MARY L. HARTZELL Mary Lou Hartzell, 57, died October 27, 2000. Ms Hartzell was bom Mary Lou Vandehey on March 29, 1943, in McMinnville. She graduated from Banks High School and was a book keeper for the Washington County Ex tension Service and for several other companies, retiring from Building Ma terial Specialties in Hillsboro in 1992. She was a member of Beaverton Foursquare Church. She married Fran cis Hartzell in 1972 and they later di vorced. Survivors include two sons, Troy and Travis; one daughter, Tracey; five sisters, Betty Fuller, Mert Fenimore, Darlene Wood, Terry McRoberts and Dot Pecks; one brother, Elden Vande hey; and two grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to a favorite charity. Holman Hankins Bowker & Waud was in charge of arrangements. JOHN W. ABEL, JR. John Wesley Abel Jr., 77, Cor nelius, died October 31, 2000. Grave side services were held November 3, at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove, with the Rev. Rich LaMar of the Gales Creek Community Church of God, officiating. A flag honor presentation by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5233 of Forest Grove took place. Mr. Abel was bom June 3, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to John W. and Emma Gladys (Gildersleeve) Abel. As a young boy, he moved to Beaverton, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years during World War II. He married Rosa Kelly in 1973 and they lived in Hazel Park, Mich, She died in 1988. He moved to Cornelius in August. * * Mr. Abel was a tool and die maker for Chrysler in the Detroit area. He re tired in 1988. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as comman der of the Cooties, a division of the VFW in Hazel Park. Survivors include two sons, John W. Ill of Cornelius and Patrick of Port land; a step-daughter, Barbara Weath- erburn of Ypsilanti, Mich.; sisters, Louise Neubarth of Forest Grove; Erma Seiffert of Banks and Ruth Green of Troutdale; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. She taught high school in Ridgefield, Wash, and then at St. Mary’s of the Valley in Beaverton, until retiring in the early 1980’s. In 1960, she married Len Chisholm. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mary Evans, Mar garet Chisholm and Paula Cousins; a son, Alec; three sisters, Dorothy Niel son, Mildred Bernards and Sister Er- malinda Van Domelen; five brothers, Anthony, Bud, Bernard, Don and Robert; and six grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to American Cancer Society. Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in Vancouver was in charge of arrange ments. DAVID L. LOHR David LeRoy Lohr, 73, died Octo ber 31, 2000. Services were held No vember 8, 2000. Mr. Lohr was bom August 7, 1927, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Markwood D. and Gwendola M. Lohr. He moved to Oregon in 1942 and attended Benson High Polytechnic in Portland. In 1943, he worked for the Greyhound Bus Line, and, in 1944, joined the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Ship Builders. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 through 1946. Fol lowing his service, he worked as an ap pliance repairman then began working for Tektronix in 1957, where he stayed until retiring in 1985. Mr. Lohr was a member of the Ver nonia First Christian Church. Survivors include children; Judy M. Lee of Kenai, Alaska, David M. Lohr of Littleton, Colo., Susan L. Lohr of El lensburg, Wash., Teresa L. Bergerson of Vernonia, Francesca V. Smith of Hillsboro and Avila Feliz Lohr of Hills boro; one granddaughter, four great grandchildren, six sisters; Vera Dodge, Verna Edwards, Mary Phillips, Doris Fulton, DeLores Leece, Donna Demp sey and a brother; Mark Jr. Remembrances are suggested to Providence Hospice. WILLIAM H. NIXON William H. Nixon, 72, died Novem ber 7, 2000. A service was held No vember 15 in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. Mr. Nixon was bom April 16, 1928, in Vernonia and was raised in Portland. He graduated from Benson Polytechni cal High School in 1946, then served in the U.S. Army. He was a warehouse man for Centennial Mills for 41 years before retiring in 1990. He was a member of Milwaukie Seventh-day Adventist Church. He married Dian Hoeck in 1950. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kelly Dodd, Elizabeth Palumbo and Rebecca Nixon; two sons, David and Bill III; and four grand children. Remembrances are suggested to Mt. Hood Hospice. Mr. Chisholm was bom December 17, 1926, in Portland. Her maiden name was Van Domelen.
