New county jail comes in on schedule, under budget
As Columbia County’s new
jail and corrections center
nears completion, Commis
sioner Tony Hyde and Sheriff
Phil Derby have announced
that the project is both on time
...and brought it in under budg
et and on time,” Hyde said.
“This jail was a community ef
fort. We greatly appreciate the
public’s support.”
The new jail will provide
Book signing, talk
at St. Helens Books
A book signing and read-
ing/discussion with Portland
author, Michael Hoeye, will be
held on Thursday, November 9,
at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Helens
Book Shop. Hoeye will be sign
ing his first novel Time Stops
For No Mouse, published by
Terfle Books.
Time Stops For No Mouse, a
young adult novel, is the ad
venture of Hermux Tantamoq,
an ordinary, but likeable city
mouse. Hermux is a watch
maker who finds himself up to
his whiskers in mystery over
the disappearance of a beauti
ful young mouse. Before the
mystery is solved, Hermux will
have to outrun a squad of ruth
less lab rats and travel to the
deepest jungles of Teulabonari.
Hoeye rates this novel “not too
scary.”

enough space to house in
mates who currently are being
released because the existing
jail is too small.
The public will be invited to
attend the events scheduled to
celebrate the opening of the
impressive facility. There will
be free public tours scheduled
and under budget. The jail is
scheduled to open in January,
2001.
County officials started the
effort to build a new jail three
years ago because the old jail
is overcrowded and the county
is forced to release criminals
early.
Agreeing with the recom
mendations of a Citizens Com
mittee appointed by Hyde and
Derby, Columbia County voters
passed a $13.9 million bond
measure in 1998 to build the
new jail. Construction started in
August, 1999.
There will be charge for the
party and Bed & Breakfast. All
proceeds will be donated to the
Columbia County Women’s
Resource Center or the Colum
bia County Food Bank. The
Women’s Resource Center
provides services for domestic
abuse victims. The Food Bank
provides food and basic sup
plies for low income county
residents.

“Columbia County residents
should be very proud of their
county employees, particularly
those in the Sheriff’s Office,
who have managed jail con
struction so well," said Com
missioner Hyde.
“We never lost sight of the
fact that county taxpayers are
paying for this project. Working
as a team with the contractor
and the management firm, we
have built a safe, quality facility
for both day and evening
hours, a Jail House Rock bash
and even a Jail House Bed &
Breakfast. All events are tenta
tively scheduled for December.
The Jail House Rock Bash
will include live music and a jail
house meal. Those wishing to
spend the night can stay
overnight at the Jail Bed &
Breakfast, which includes din
ner, breakfast and mug shots.
Commemorative shirts will also
be available.
