be asked to complete 300
hours of sweat equity, which
may include educational cours
es, construction and working
on fundraising.
Habitat for Humanity is
unique in the way it recycles
donations from the community.
Money raised to build the
house in St. Helens will come
back to the organization in the
form of mortgage payments. “It
is nice to know that my mort
gage payments will be used to
build a house for another fami
ly,” said Rye.
Although Columbia County
Habitat for Humanity is affiliat
ed with the International Habi
tat for Humanity organization, it
receives no financial support
from outside the County. An
additional $45,000 is needed to
complete the house. The build
ing site is located at 145 South
3rd Street in St. Helens. To
make a donation toward the
construction of the St. Helens
house, mail a check payable to
Columbia County Habitat for
Humanity to P. O. Box 921, St.
Helens, OR 97051. To find out
about volunteer opportunities
or apply for a Habitat home,

Debbie Rye of St. Helens
was introduced to the public at
the groundbreaking ceremony
on October 7, as Columbia
County Habitat for Humanity’s
first partner family. This desig
nation gives Rye the opportuni
ty to build her own home along
side other volunteers from the
county.
“As a single mother of four
boys, the possibility of owning
a home was just a dream, until
now,” said Rye. “When I was
growing up, we moved around
a lot. It is important for me to
own my own home so that I can
put down some roots for my
kids.”
Twenty-five families applied
for the opportunity to build their
own home with Columbia
County Habitat for Humanity.
“Debbie stood out from the oth
er applicants because she
showed a history of financial
responsibility,” explained Chris
ty Settle, co-chair of the Family
Selection Committee. “Family
selection is based on need,
ability to make mortgage pay
ments on a no-interest loan,
and willingness to complete the
required sweat-equity hours.”
As a single parent, Debbie will
