Both incom ing and ou t going mail have been targeted, according to Sheriff Phil Derby. Sometimes the thieves are looking for cash, only, and will take it from incoming and ou t going Christm as and birthday cards, as well as any other cash in mail. Others look for credit cards or related inform a tion which they use to pur chase item s th a t will be charged to the cardholder. With new technology avail able, there are enterprising in dividuals who take checks and money orders stolen from mail boxes, “w ash” them and re write them to fit their needs. “ I would like to ask for your assistance in helping to com bat this form of crim e,” said Derby, “by adhering to the fol lowing recom m endations when mailing financial docum ents or other im portant item s.” • Do not place the mail in your rural box to be picked up by the mail carrier. Take it to a post office or place it in a blue USPS mail box in various city locations. These boxes have you r mail delivery stopped while you are gone or have someone pick it up daily. • Do not send cash in the mail. • Do not leave mail in your mail box any longer than nec essary. Pacific U niversity’s Psycho logical Service Center (PSC) in downtown Portland is seeking participants for a study in treat ing depression in group thera py settings. The groups will include 8-10 people and sessions will be led w eekly by professional thera pists and graduate students. Both forms of therapy will be used over an eight-week peri od. P articipants w ill pay a m odest ($15) fee for each ses sion. The first group began e a rlie r this ye a r and new groups are beginning each month.
