The INDEPENDENT, September 6, 2000 Page 9 “Piano” teacher develops opportunities unusual for a small town It’s not unusual for a town the size of Vernonia to have two or three piano teachers. But who would expect - in a town of 2400 people - to find a music school that can offer les sons in piano, violin, viola, cel lo, drum, French horn, clarinet, voice and music theory? Actu ally, nobody who knows Made leine Gendron would be sur prised. Gendron, who moved to Vernonia seven years ago with her husband, Dave Herndon, and their family, had studied voice, choir and music theory throughout her school years, and earned a 10th degree in pi ano at Laval University in her native Quebec. She also stud ied clarinet and guitar. With six years of teaching experience in Quebec, she started teaching in Vernonia four years ago. As she became involved in other musical activ ities, she realized that music studies were also needed by people from Banks, Mist, Birkenfeld and Clatskanie. She became a member of the Ore gon Music Teachers Associa tion (OMTA) and, in her second year, had nearly 20 students. Gendron teaches piano at the Banks Community United Methodist Church and music theory for orchestra and band students of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in Portland. Among the activities Gen dron arranges for her own stu dents are group trips (with complimentary tickets) to sym phonies or concerts, including three each year to MYS. “Music brings joy and light in one’s life,” Gendron says. Ob viously, she wants to share the joy. For more information, she may be reached at 503-429- 9402, or <Madeleinegendron@ yahoo.com>.
