Mrs. Mercer was bom Feb. 25, 1918, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Lewis and Edythe (Brockaway) Norelius. The family moved to Oroville, Wash., where she graduated from high school. She earned a bachelor of science degree in English from the University of Wash ington. She farmed in the Gaston/Forest Grove area, raising walnuts and fil berts, then worked for Tektronix in For est Grove. After retiring, Mrs. Mercer moved to Vernonia, where she volunteered as a clerk for the Justice of the Peace. She later moved to Forest Grove. Survivors include son Jack M. of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Gary of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Nancy Brannon of Lake Oswego; brother, Marvin Nore lius, sisters, Barbara Jean Doolittle and Donna Norelius, all of Bellevue, Wash; five grandchildren, three great-grand sons; nieces and nephews. AGNES STURDEVANT Agnes Sturdevant, 98, Forest Grove, died July 25, 2000. Graveside services were held July 29 at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Grant Williams officiating. Mrs. Sturdevant was bom Oct. 21, 1901, in Brighton Colo., to Edward N. and Tellisty M. (Kirk) French. The fami ly homesteaded in Alberta, Canada. Af ter eighth grade, she clerked in a gen eral store and was the assistant post mistress. In 1920, she married Marinus H. Rasmussen. They moved to Moxee City, Wash., in 1925, where her hus band worked on a ranch. He died in 1926 of injuries sustained while un loading machinery. After his death, she moved her family to Yakima, Wash. In 1942, she married Benjamin Barker, in Yakima; they moved to Ver nonia in 1947. He died in 1961. In Vernonia, she worked in the vari ety store and as a custodian for Crown Zellerbach for 15 years. Mrs. Sturdevant was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by five sisters, four brothers and a son, Henry E. Rasmussen in 1974. Survivors include two sons, Earle J. Rasmussen of Yakima, and Lyle E. Barker of Vernonia; a daughter, Dorothy A. Watkins of Nonwalk, Calif.; a brother, Ralph of Selah, Wash.; a sis ter, Dorothea Evans of Bend. 11 grand children; several great- and great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Wilson, 87, Westport, died July 22, 2000, at Community Home Health and Hospice in Longview, Wash. A Celebration of Life was held July 27 at Westport Community Church, with the Rev. Earl Johnson, pastor emeritus, officiating. Private in urement will follow. Mr. Wilson was bom Aug. 21, 1912, in Brown City, Mich., to Leo E. and Re becca (Hillis) Wilson. They moved to New Mexico when he was young. He married Emma H. Like in Raton, N. Mex., in 1934. In 1942, they moved to the Portland area, where he worked in the shipyards. They lived in Deer Is land from 1943 until 1953 when they moved to Westport, where they pur chased and operated Barhand's Gen eral Store until buying the Westport Motel in 1961. Mr. Wilson built the Wilson Mobile Home Park and owned and operated Wilson and Son Trucking Company and the Spar Tree Restaurant near Vernonia, until retiring in the 1970s. Survivors include his wife; a daugh ter, Norma Jeanne Blackburn of West- port; son, Hughy of Rochester, Wash.; a granddaughter, great-grandson; sev eral nieces, nephews and cousins. MONROE B. “JIM” MORTON III Monroe B. “Jim” Morton III, 81, For est Grove, died July 16, 2000. A memorial service was held at Forest Grove Memorial Chapel, with Wendell Patch officiating. Inurnment was at Mt. View Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove. Mr. Morton was bom Aug. 17,1918, in Tiflin, Ohio, to Monroe Jr., and Ber nice (Draper) Morton. They moved to Evanstown, III, until 1929, then to Lon don, England, where he received his education. He attended Nichols Col lege in Massachusetts, and the Univer sity of Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 and served in active duty during World War II. He remained in the Army on re serve status, until retiring with the rank of Colonel. In 1943, he married Margaret Skeen. Mr. Morton worked with a crude drug company in Seattle for several years before moving to the Yakima Val ley in 1948, to be the operating partner in a farming venture. He started his own farm in 1953 and farmed for sev eral years. In 1953, he married Marjorie Warn er. They lived in the Yakima valley until moving to Clatskanie in 1963. He served as a member and/or chairman of the Columbia County Planning Commission, the County Board of Equalization, Columbia Coun ty Budget Committee, Columbia River Association of Drainage Districts, on the school board of Columbia County District 5J, the Soil Conservation Dis trict, Board of Supervisors of the Beaver Drainage District, and the Quincy Water District. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and a member of Clatskanie Masonic Lodge. In 1981, he moved to Wilsonville, then to Forest Grove. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jeoffrey, of Heber, Utah; a daughter, Pamela of Port Townsend, Wash.; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. GUPTON Marie Cecelia Gupton, 86, Forest Grove, died July 25, 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 31 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with Father Elwin C. Schwab, celebrant. Mrs. Gupton was bom Feb 20, 1914, in Portland, to John and Isabel (Fitzgerald) Marchel. She was raised in Timber and attended St. Mary of the Valley Catholic School in Beaverton, and Forest Grove High School. She married Elmer Gupton in 1946, and they lived in Salem, Portland and Vancouver, Wash., before moving to Gales Creek in 1957. They moved to La Pine in 1977, and her husband died in 1982. Mrs. Gupton lived in Salem from 1988 until 1993, then moved to Forest Grove She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley A. Stevens of Aumsville, and Rita C. White of Forest Grove; a son, Robert M. “Bob” Kline of Forest Grove; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchil dren and several cousins.
