The INDEPENDENT, July 5, 2000 Page 5 Volunteer Tea honors many who aid school The Vernonia Education As sociation honored Vernonia School District volunteers at a tea June 6 at the Vernonia High School library. Volunteers logged over 6500 hours in the district during the past year, said Superinten dent Larry McClellan, during remarks he made to approxi mately 40 volunteers present at the event. Some of Vernonia’s school volunteers and district staff at the tea in their honor on June 6. % “ High achieving schools al ways have good parent volun teer programs behind the dis trict. Volunteers make this dis trict a better district," said Ver nonia High School Principal Mike Durbin. He noted that 3400 hours were contributed by volunteers at VHS alone, 1200 of those hours by senior project mentors. The award honored specifically the school’s efforts to “bridge the gap between school and home.” The fall Bedtime Story Hour, Fam ily Math N ight, grandparent involvem ent, a weekly newsletter and fam ily projects helped cem ent recog nition by the OSSA. Sherril said that two things contribute to making a school above and beyond satisfactory: hard teachers and com munity volunteer programs. M arguerite Nice, head teacher at LGS, expressed gratitude to all the volunteers who have helped make LGS an award-winning school.
