Page 24 The INDEPENDENT, June 7, 2000 Splendid Audacity tells story of Pacific University’s beginnings Splendid Audacity: The Sto ry of Pacific University, the first comprehensive history of the 150-year-old Forest Grove in stitution has just been released and is now available. The cof fee-table book is the product of more than a year of extensive research and writing by co-au thors Gary Miranda and Rick Read. “Splendid audacity” was a phrase used in 1905 by writer James R. Robertson to de scribe the circumstances of hte founding of Pacific University. Today that theme is carried through the history of the insti tution and still rings true 150 years later. Miranda and Read weave the memories, tradi tions, and history of the Uni versity into an extraordinary tale of community, students, professors, alumni, and admin istrators who built Pacific and keep it thriving. The history of Oregon and Forest Grove is also tied into the stories to cre ate a unique look at the North west. Gary Miranda is a well- known Northwest writer. He did his graduate work at San Jose State College and the Universi ty of California, Irvine. He has taught at various colleges, in cluding Chapman College’s World Campus Afloat, the Uni versity of Athens in Greece, and Reed College. His pub lished works include two books of poetry from Princeton Uni versity Press, one of which was nominated for the 1980 Pulitzer Prize; a translation of Rainier Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies', and a history of Portland’s Congregation Neveh Shalom. His work has appeared in many magazines, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and Poetry. Rick Read is currently Field Services Coordinator for the Oregon Historical Society in Portland.
