He served three terms in the Civil ian Conservation Corps and was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1936 until 1940, when he received a medical discharge. PHILLIP A. WESSELS Phillip Alfred Wessels, 85, Forest Grove, died May 26, 2000. No public services will be held. Mr. Wessels was born July 18, 1914, in Seattle, Wash., to Louis J. and Josephine (Leasia) Wessels. He grew COLUMBIA ROAD & DRIVEWAY, INC. 3 5 3 6 5 Hankey Road, St. H elens He married Mary Sandy in 1937, in Banks. They lived in Banks and Cor nelius before moving to Forest Grove in 1990. Mr. Wessels worked for the Port land Police Department until 1944, when he joined the Forest Grove Po lice Department until retiring in 1974. He served as president of the Inter national Foot-Printers and was a mem ber of Portland Elks Lodge 142, and the Forest Grove Wood Carvers and Gem Club, as well as being an active participant in the Cornelius City Coun cil and the Cornelius Historical Society. Mr. Wessels was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathy Haag, and a brother, Perry. Pri vate services will be held at a later date at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Salem. Disposition was by cremation. Judge Melvin “Glen” Hieber was born in Wilbur, Wash., on September 14, 1911, to Charles and Martha Hieber. The family moved to Vernonia when he was in grade school. He graduated from Vernonia High School, then from the University of Oregon in 1934. He received a law degree from U of O in 1936. He worked as an attorney in pri vate practice. He married Dorothy Challacombe in 1941 in Hillsboro. Judge Hieber served in Europe as a captain in the U.S. Army during WWII. He then attended Harvard Uni versity School of Court Administrators while in the service. He was appointed deputy district attorney for G. Russell Morgan. Then was appointed the first district judge in Washington County in 1951. In 1955, he was appointed circuit court judge for Washington County by Governor Paul Patterson, retiring in December, 1976. In 1977, he became a senior judge and also served as a pro tern circuit court judge in several counties in Oregon. Additionally, he became an arbitrator and taught in Judge's College in Uni versity of Nevada in Reno. Judge Hieber was a member of Fri ars Honorary Society and ATO Frater nity, VFW Post #2666, Masonic Lodge - Tuality Lodge #6, a charter member of the Lions Club, Washington County Bar, Oregon State Bar, University of Oregon Alumni Association. He was a former member of Forest Hills Golf Club, West Hills Racket Club, Chair man for Hillsboro Library Board and Washington County Historical Society. He attended All Saints Episcopal and St. Bartholomews Church. Survivors include his wife; daugh ters, Glenda Blanchard of Salem and Julia Mewhinney of Hillsboro; a broth er, Gordon of Salem; four grandchil dren. Remembrances are suggested to the Oregon School of the Blind. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Phyllis Palmer of Portland, and Sandy Kalsch of Hillsboro; six grandchildren; two great-grandchil dren; one sister, Goldie Kadow of Van couver, Wash.
