VHS baseball finishes 3-16 season
As the weather decided to
cooperate,
Vernonia High
School baseball team was able
to complete a rescheduled
double header at home against
Catlin Gabel. The Loggers split
the double bill, 12-13 and 8-6.
Vernonia lost the first game,
in spite of producing 12 runs.
Jon Luttrell was the Loggers’
leading scorer, accounting for
three runs. Everett Brown and
David Koch each added two
more, while solo scores were
tallied by Justin Johnson, Jere
my Davis, Mitch Wood, John
Walters and Matt Kelly.
In the second game, Luttrell
again led the scoring, with two
runs. Johnson, Davis, Kyle
Cota, Kelly, Walters, and Koch
contributed scoring efforts to
the 8-6 win.
Another double header,
against Warrenton on May 5,
resulted in a double loss, 15-1
and 11-1. Koch and Kohei Na-
gashio provided the Loggers’
only runs for the day.
The first double-header of
the month, against Knappa on
May 2, also provided two loss
es, 6-2 and 11-2.
Koch and Nagashio scored
in the first game; Curtis Golson
and Kyle Cota each scored a
run in the fifth inning of the sec
ond game.
The team’s final game was
played last night at Corbett, too
late for deadline. Their overall

Softball season ends with losses
The Vernonia High School
softball team ended their sea
son with a twin bill and twin
losses against Corbett at Delta
Park on May 13. Final scores
were 8-2 and 7-1.
Bonnie Buchan and Jennifer
Grady scored the only runs in
the first game.
During the second game,
Jessica Allison’s RBI scored
Nicole Koch.
“The score of this game
shows the team has improved,”
said coach Dana Hyde. “The
last time we played Corbett,
the score was 15-0.”
Games on May 5 and May 6
resulted in three losses — to
Portland Christian, 14-2, and
Warrenton, 11-1 and 9-1.
Fawn Cecil pitched and
scored the only run of the first
game against Warrenton.
Uncertainty fueled a loss to
Knappa on May 2.
“I don’t think the girls were
feeling too sure of themselves,”
said Hyde. “Knappa is our
archrival, and this was a diffi
cult loss at home, especially
since we’d beaten Knappa on
their home field.”
“Overall, the season has
been a success,” Hyde con-

WGS track team

Washington Grade School’s
seventh grade boys’ track team
turned in an astonishing victory
at a seven-school meet in
Scappoose on May 13. Partici
pating in ten of twelve events,
from high jump to hurdles, the
WGS team defeated the other
six schools with a cumulative
score of 44 points.
Even more astonishing is
that they accomplished this
feat with only five of their nine-
member team participating.
Team members sharing in
the WGS victory were Jim
Benes, Travis Gwin, Dexter
Harris, Eric Schmidlin and Josh
Staggenborg.
Coach Clint Kelley is under
standably proud of the team’s
efforts, and the accompanying
trophy.
