Charles Henry Weigant, Sr., 69, Vernonia, died May 3, 2000, at his home. A celebration of life service was held May 13, at the home of Dewey and Kelly Kozachenko, in Vernonia. Mr. Weigant was born December 19,1930, in Portland, to Carl and Marie (Thiedeman) Weigant. He was raised and educated in the Cully neighbor hood of Portland. He served 11 years in the U.S. Air Force, from 1948 to 1959, including service in the Korean conflict. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Weigant married Martha Wilson in 1976 in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Rubidoux, Calif. In 1983- 84, they spent a year-and-a-half travel ing across the country, then moved to Vernonia in 1984. He worked in construction, then as a maintenance man until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Weigant was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 1, in Portland. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Charles H. II of Hillsboro, Dewey Kozachenko of Vernonia, Jerry of Port land, and Harry Kozachenko, Jr. of Tri- Cities, Wash.; two daughters, Joyce Mills of Indiana, and Nellie Koza chenko of Estacada; a sister, Amelia May Downing of Tillamook; 18 grand children; three great-grandchildren; nieces and a nephew. HELEN D. WILUAMS Helen D. Williams, 81, Forest Grove, died May 10, 2000 in Hillsboro. Graveside services were held May 13 at Gales Creek Cemetery in Gales Creek. A Flag Honor Presentation was under the direction of the Forest Grove American Legion Washington Post #2. Mrs. Williams was born April 2, 1919, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Cary C. and Janie (Orders) Duncan. She grew up in Charlotte and attended Marysville College in Tennessee, then Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. She also attended the School of Fine Art and Design Institute in New York City and Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, where she received a teaching degree. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps as a Technical Sergeant at Ft. Sill, Okla. She was awarded the Army Commen dation Ribbon for meritorious service, and was discharged at Fort Bragg, N.C., in 1945. She married Ray A. Williams in 1945 at Ft. Sill. Mrs. Williams taught at Dilley Grade School and Harvey Clarke Elementary School. In 1957, she began teaching at Banks Elementary School and taught third grade there for 21 years, until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the American Legion Washington Post #2 in Forest Grove, and the Forest Grove Elkettes B.P.O.E. #2440. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janie L. Day of Portland, and Stephanie R. Wray of Seattle, Wash.; a son, Chester D. of Forest Grove; a brother, C.C. Duncan of Char lotte, North Carolina; and two sisters, Evelyn Calvin of Conover, N.C., and Janie Calhoun of Charlotte N.C.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchil dren, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held May 12 in Trinity Episcopal Cathe dral. Mrs. Babcock was bom April 17, 1954 in Portland, to Richard and Martha Phillippi. She graduated from the Catlin Gable School, then attended Lewis & Clark College and the Univer sity of Oregon, graduating with a bach elor’s degree in early childhood educa tion. She married Forrest Babcock in 1977. They moved to Banks in 1989. Mrs. Babcock had been employed in the Banks Public Library since 1995. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Aaron and Roby, both of Banks; a daughter Laura, also of Banks; par ents, Richard and Martha Phillippi of Portland; and a brother, Lincoln Phillip pi of Grants Pass. Remembrances are suggested to St. Vincent's Hospice, Banks Public Li brary, or to melanoma research at Providence Portland Medical Center’s Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center. LENORA V. CARDWELL Lenora Viola Cardwell, 64, Laurel- wood, died May 9, 2000, at her home. Memorial services were held May 14, at the Newberg Seventh-Day Adventist Church, with Pastor Clifford Gleason officiating. Mrs. Cardwell was born October 12,1935, in Rogue River, to Robert D. and Ida (Frieze) Sprecher. She attend ed school in Newberg. She married Clifford Cardwell in 1952, in Vancouver, Wash. They made their home in Newberg until moving to Laurelwood in 1969. Survivors include her husband; sons, Richard of Vernonia, Clifford Jr. of Salem, and Randy of Touchet, Wash.; daughters, Brenda Stuivenga of Amity, Rhonda Lueptow of Gaston, and Kathy of Aloha; a brother, Kenny Sprecher of Spanaway, Wash; six sis ters, Carolyn Lacy of Dundee, Mabel Brown and Ruby Baldwin, both of Tacoma, Alice of Cornelius, Doris Irvin of King City and Helen of Tigard; and 12 grandchildren Remembrances are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of Attrell’s Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132. CLARA E. “BETTY” BUSH Clara Elizabeth “Betty” Bush, 83, Banks, died May 1, 2000. A memorial mass will be at 11 a.m., June 1, in St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Dunlap, Illi nois. Private interment will be in St. Clement Cemetery in Dunlap. Mrs. Bush was born Nov. 26, 1916, in Peoria, III. Her maiden name was Seipel. In 1935, she married J. Clifford Bush; he died in 1971. She was a field director for the American Heart Association for 17 years, covering eight counties in cen tral Illinois. She was a member of the church and served on the boards of the Peoria Deanery Council of Catholic Women. She also was a founding member of the Dunlap Library Guild and a board member for the Rural Peo ria County Council on Aging. Mrs. Bush lived in Banks for the past seven years. Funeral services are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at the Banks Community United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Union Point Cemetery in Banks. Mrs. Lacey was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Scofield and was raised in Roy and Banks. Her maiden name was Cutright. She graduated from Banks High School, worked at Sunset Can nery for 19 years, and was a reel as sembler for GAF in Tigard for 14 years before her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the church. In 1948, she married Norman Lacey. Survivors include her husband; sons, David F. and Rick; daughters, Tina Spiering and Peggy; brother, Bud Cutright; sister, Nellie Wright; and sev en grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
