Page 16 The INDEPENDENT, April 5, 2000 Students invited to submit art work Artwork, poetry and essays by local students are being sought for display with an up coming exhibit on Martin Luth er King, Jr. The exhibit will be held May 2 - May 24 at the Co lumbia Center in St. Helens. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s is the subject of the exhibit, which consists of black and white photography, facsimiles of landmark docu ments, quotations from the speeches and writings of Dr. King, and brief narrative texts. A com panion exhibit, “The Road To The Promised Land,” describing the political legacy of the 1960s by facing the is sues of labor struggle, feminist activism, Native American ac tivism and the continued strug gle against race-biased culture, will be shown at the same time. Columbia County students are invited to submit artwork or written pieces on any aspect of the civil rights movement. The deadline for subm issions is April 21.
